Sony Is Skipping Gamescom For The Fifth Year in a Row
Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation brand won’t be making an appearance at Gamescom this year. This marks the fifth consecutive year that the company hasn’t appeared at the gaming expo in Cologne, Germany. At this point, it’s less of a blow and more of a general notification – and Sony isn’t alone. The likes of Nintendo also confirmed that they won’t be appearing at the showcase, but fear not, as plenty of publishers, developers, and other companies will be present and correct in August.
Since 2019, Sony has shunned Gamescom in favour of hosting its own showcases. On social media platforms, many gamers have posted tongue-in-cheek responses to the news, claiming that PlayStation doesn’t have anything to show anyway. We’re supposed to be months away from the release of a PS5 Pro, but so far, no games are coming out that are set to substantially ‘test’ the console.
Sorely Missed
Now that E3 has been forever cancelled, Gamescom stands firm as the biggest and most popular gaming expo on the planet. It’s held annually in Cologne, welcoming hundreds of thousands of gamers, trade representatives, and industry workers. It’s the proving ground for some smaller developers and the perfect exhibition spot for the biggest names in the business. To kick off the event, Geoff Keighley presents the Opening Night Live ceremony, which plays host to some of the most stunning announcements in the industry.
Mixed responses were recorded following Sony’s basic confirmation:
‘Sony Interactive currently has no plans to exhibit at Gamescom 2024.’
While there’s still time for Sony to announce a presence of some kind at the show, it’s more or less a safe bet to believe that the Japanese tech titan won’t appear in Germany in August. Recently, the firm hosted a State of Play update, revealing content coming for existing games as well as showcasing fresh trailers for upcoming projects – but it wasn’t very well received. By contrast, the recent event hosted by Microsoft was much more impressive.
Will Sony be missed at Gamescom 2024?
