Suicide Squad Cost Warner Bros. $200 Million, Report Says
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was released at the tail end of January 2024 and promptly flopped, failing to secure positive reviews or a sizeable player base. It was effectively written off as soon as it was released, despite a major marketing campaign being pushed out by Warner Bros. to promote the game worldwide. In a recent report, it has been revealed that the considerable failure of Suicide Squad cost Warner Bros., the game’s publisher, a whopping $200 million.
The report refers to Suicide Squad as being the biggest gaming-related failure of 2024, and it’s easy to see the truth in the claim. It tanked monumentally from the moment it hit the market, and even several delays didn’t seem to have given the project enough time to be perfected at Rocksteady Studios. Sadly, the WB team expected the game to see success on par with 2023’s Hogwarts Legacy, which has sold almost 25 million copies, but it wasn’t to be.
A Costly Mistake
In a recent report published in Bloomberg, it was revealed that Suicide Squad entered development hell relatively early on. It first came about in 2017, but by 2020, it was still not shaping up as expected, with some developers being unaware of exactly what it was they were building. It was reported as being ‘significantly complex’ to build from the ground up and plans to release the game in 2022 were effectively shot down – as were successive proposals for a release window.
Internal reports suggested that the studio’s lack of solid leadership caused bottlenecks in the development process that slowed things down to no end. It was claimed that entire chunks of the game were pitched, created, and then ditched again several months later, and developers started getting desperate to escape the crushing weight of piecing together this live service game that seemed to be failing at every twist and turn.
Ultimately, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was released to a paltry reception, securing low scores across the board and failing to gain any tangible traction. It fell into an abyss, and even the premise of it being a live service title wasn’t enough to pull in users who wanted to hang around. It’ll go down in history as one of the worst games of all time, and given the status of recent titles like Redfall, that’s one hell of a title to achieve.
