Tales of Arise was released in 2021 to critical acclaim from developer Bandai Namco. The game was the 17th entry into the long-running Tales series, bringing it back in style. The short answer to this question is “sort of.” Unlike most RPGs out there, you don’t have a choice in the Tales of Arise romance storyline. You don’t get to decide who romances who. Instead, the game’s only romance plays out across the game’s narrative, and there’s nothing you can do to change that.
So yes, there is romance in Tales of Arise. Just not in the way you might be expecting. There’s no way to deviate from the one defined romance, which will definitely be disappointing for some players. However, in this case, that’s just the way Bandai Namco has decided to approach romance in Tales of Arise.

The romance in Tales of Arise is between two of the main characters: Alphen and Shionne. Their relationship blossoms over the course of the game, after they team up at the very beginning. It’s a slow process, but one that is rewarding to follow. Cute and satisfying, while also often being hilarious, the romance in this game is near perfect.
To experience the romance storyline, you just have to play through the game. There are no special requirements you need to meet to make it happen – Alphen and Shionne’s romance is locked into the storyline, no matter what. At the end of Tales of Arise, Alphen and Shionne are married and share a kiss together. It’s a fitting ending to their story, and it remains to be seen if it will be explored further in the Tales series.
