When Roblox Was Made? | The History of Roblox

It’s been around for a while now, but Roblox had humble beginnings. Ever wonder when Roblox was made? We take a look at the evolution of the game development environment, and how it came to be.

When Roblox was Made

When it was first made, it had a completely different name. DynaBlocks was the original working title for what would become the game it is today. David Baszucki and Erik Cassel worked together on a project focused on creating an environment where users could both play and create Roblox games of their own. The hybrid word of Dynamic Blocks instead became a mix of “Robots” and “Blocks”, forming the name we now know and love.

This project got its start in 2004 under the Dynablocks moniker, but 2006 is where most would consider it have gotten its start, when it released to the public.

Who were David Baszucki and Erik Cassel?

Baszucki is the more public face when it comes to the two founders. Before Roblox, he was a co-founder and CEO for Knowledge Revolution – a company that focused on 2D physics simulations. Cassel worked as VP of Engineering on Interactive Physics. This is one of their most popular software that was especially popular among young students.

Roblox has been on a steady rise since its release, with the damage soundbite from the game being amongst some of the most recognizable memes. It wasn’t until the back end of the 2010s that the rise of Roblox would take off to where it is today. The game became even more explosive during the COVID 19 lockdown, where children were inside, looking to hang out online. It had a plethora of idle and tycoon games that became some of the most popular games in Roblox, which allows players to upgrade their houses in fictional towns. Due to the amount of downtime, there was plenty of time to socialize.

As a result, hangouts that couldn’t be had in person due to COVID-19, could be done on the Roblox servers. For free. It’s really no surprise that it became the online gaming sensation that it did. The fact that it’s still so popular today is a testament to the format.
