As we anticipate the arrival of GTA 6 this year, we need to look at the current GTA 5 Player count. GTA 5 has been played for over a decade on 3 generations of consoles available from the Xbox 360 and PS3 generations to the current generation. It is widely known to be the most successful game in the series, selling over 190 million copies worldwide, making it the second highest-selling video game of all time and making Rock Star games about 7.7 billion dollars.
That said, it’s been more than 10 years since its launch, and Rockstar Games has released other titles. So, while we wait for GTA 6, let’s find out the GTA 5 player count.

GTA 5 follows the series’ similar formula of an open-world city called Los Santos. Players were given control of 3 main protagonists: Trevor, Micheal and Franklin. The main objective and stories of GTA 5 take an average of 32 hours to complete, while the side missions challenges and any other activity you need to complete 100% of the game will take around 84 hours. This, however, is not what made GTA relevant for over a decade and kept players coming back; that was GTA Online.
GTA Online was released a few weeks after the launch of GTA 5. It allowed players to explore Los Santos with other players, go on heists, take job roles as police officers and taxi drivers and buy unique vehicles and apartments with in-game currency.

While GTA 5 was a phenomenal game, GTA Online elevated that experience. Rockstar Games provided content and updates for years and across generations, providing enough content for old players to keep playing and attracting new players, making 4th highest concurrent game according to Steam player count.

GTA 5 has recorded over 140 million players since its launch, making it the 6th most-played video game ever. With all that being said, how many people play GTA 5 in 2025? The answer to that is over 115,000 active players still play GTA 5. This is mostly in the GTA 5 Online mode, but for a game that is a decade old, it is massive, surpassing more recent games. Rockstar released another great title in 2018, Red Dead Redemption 2, but while the game was great in almost every way, the online mode was left for dead as it did not get as much support as GTA 5 did.
It is safe to say that the player count of GTA 5 will be healthy for a while and will probably remain that way until we finally get GTA 6.
