How to get Hextech keys and fragments in League of Legends

Ever since Riot Games introduced Hextech Crafting, players obtained the possibility to unlock in-game items. Ranging from champion skins, eternals, or ward skins, you can get access to nearly everything. That being said, to get those in-game items, you need to be able to open the Hextech Chests with the Hextech Keys, which are assembled from key fragments.

This guide will tell you all the methods needed to unlock more Key fragments, thus completing more Keys and reaping more rewards from the Hextech Chests.

Playing the game… a lot

The most straightforward way to gain more key fragments and thus, more keys, is by playing the game. You will need to play in matchmade game modes such as Summoner’s Rift, ARAM, and the featured game modes like URF or Arena. The more you play, the higher the chance to get drops at the end of the game.

Improve your Honor Level

Aside from playing, Riot Games wants to reward positive and sportsmanlike behavior. The goal is to quickly increase your Honor level by performing well and receiving honor votes from your allies. By being consistent in your gameplay, the system will allow you to level up, granting better rewards the higher the level you get. Starting from Honor level 3, the frequency of getting key fragments goes up exponentially.

Bear in mind that it’s quite easy to get the Honor level reset, especially if you’re reported for negative play or verbal harassment. Consequent reports will nullify all your progress, and it will take a while before you can restore your Honor level, which you will have to build up again.

On top of earning key fragments when reaching a milestone for an Honor level, the system will also grant you Honor Capsules and orbs, which also have chances of dropping key fragments.

Complete Events and Missions

Riot Games usually has time-limited events which feature special missions and special rewards. Some of them include the Hextech Key fragments. Complete them to reap the rewards. If you have some RPs left over, you can also purchase the event pass to unlock more rewards through the missions.

Shop the keys with RPs

If you don’t want to grind out the rewards by playing the game and working towards missions, you can just brute force your way by purchasing Hextech Keys with RPs. It’s the fastest but also the most resource-intensive method, as it will cost you several bucks.

Overall, the system and the distribution of key fragments are designed to reward consistent and positive play over time, so it’s recommended to play the game on a regular basis and maintain a good attitude and strong performance.
