How to get Mega Energy in Pokémon GO – All Methods Explored
Mega Pokémon have been a gimmick since Pokémon X and Y in 2013, so many trainers may be curious as to how to get Mega Energy in Pokémon GO. Mega evolutions aren’t as straightforward as they are in the mainline games here. As such, they can be difficult. They’re also not always available. In the mainline games, items were used to Mega Evolve Pokémon, but that’s not true here.
Unlike the main games, where you can find Mega Stones in the wild, or are gifted some, you need to collect Mega Energy to Mega Evolve.
Mega Energy is not abundantly available, though. Here’s how to get it.
Mega Raids
The primary method in which trainers can get this energy is through Mega Raids. When you do a Mega Raid, if you win, you receive some mega energy. Sometimes it’s enough to mega evolve right then and there, but other times it’s not. Occasionally, Niantic forces you to do two or even three Mega Raids to be able to evolve your Pokémon.
Weekly Mega Raids are a very consistent way to get Mega Energy. In addition to being able to catch the raid target, defeating Mega Pokemon in raids grants you Mega Energy. Just like with candy, Mega Energy is specific to a species. Meaning if you were trying to achieve a Mega Steelix, you wouldn’t be able to use your energy from a Mega Venasaur for example.
This can make Mega Raids difficult to use if the Mega Raid isn’t what you want to grind for. Despite a relatively small pool of Megas, it can take a while for the Pokemon you’re trying to use to rotate back in, meaning you should definitely farm as much Energy when you can if it rotates back in.
Mega Energy without raids in Pokemon Go
IF you don’t have access to Raids, there are still ways to accrue Mega Energy. Research tasks can give you a wide range of rewards, including Mega Energy for your pokemon. Like Raids though, this mega energy is specific to the species of pokemon, meaning that the rewards may give you the wrong type.
To guarantee you get the right mega energy, you can go on walks with your Buddy. Buddy Pokemon generate candy when walked with, and if the Pokemon has previously mega evolved, then any pokemon from the line will generate mega energy as a buddy. This is great for getting consistent Mega Energy, although not quite so useful if you’re trying to Mega Evolve for the first time. When you do finally Mega Evolve, it lasts for 8 hours. After a cooldown period, you’ll be able to Mega Evolve a second time for free for your efforts.
Furthermore, not every Pokémon has a Mega Evolution in Pokémon GO. They are sporadically introducing Megas as they go along, so not everything has one right now. Additionally, not all Pokémon have Mega evolutions. The Galar region had Dynamaxing, which is not the same. Therefore, there is no Mega Evolution for Greedent, for example.
Mega Raids come and go in cycles. Right now, the Mega available is Altaria, which will be available for a little while according to the Pokémon GO raid schedule . They shift every two weeks or so. When the current one leaves, it will probably be a while until it returns. That’s why it’s imperative to get enough energy when they are available.
Mega Raids are considered four-star raids. This means that they are in between the level of a three-star such as Fletchinder and a Legendary like Regigigas. They will require some help, but they’re usually not impossible to take down.

Mega Charizard X and Y are available with energy in Pokémon GO
Be advised that, unlike when you battle any other raid, the form it is in is not how you will catch it. It reverts back to normal after the battle. If you fight a Mega Pinsir, it will revert to Pinsir once you defeat it. The only way to make any Pokémon Mega is by giving it the proper amount of energy.
Mega Energy can come in other forms
Raids are not the only way to get Mega Energy, though. They often come as a reward for completing challenges. Sometimes, Niantic will offer a Timed Research that gives a certain Pokémon more energy. They may also do Special Researches that do the same thing.
Finally, they can also be obtained by spinning Pokéstops, but they are a very rare reward. The most likely opportunity to get them is when you are spinning your own color gym and it’s the first spin of the day. Otherwise, it will be very hard to get any energy. Also, the energy obtained this way is usually just five, so it would take a lot of these to make a difference.
You can also sometimes earn a little bit of Mega Energy by walking with your Buddy Pokémon. If you have previously Mega-Evolved a Pokémon in the Buddy’s Evolutionary line, you can earn some energy for it.
Another thing to note is that once you’ve Mega evolved a Pokémon, you can do it again for free. The evolution is not permanent- it only lasts eight hours. However, after that, it won’t need the 200, 300 or however much energy it previously required.
Be sure to pay special attention to the raid schedule in each month so that you always know what’s available. Megas don’t stay very long and it may require multiple tries, so have Raid Passes and friends ready to go when a new Mega Raid arrives.
