DreamHack is coming to Asia!

One of the world’s biggest and most well-known gaming festivals – the DreamHack – is going to go (more) global. Featuring LAN competitions, live concerts, digital art contests and more, the originally Swedish event has taken place in several cities now.

Stockholm, Jönköping, Tours, Bucharest, Cluj, Valencia, London and Leipzig – the DreamHack has travelled rather extensively on the European continent. It’s a fan-favourite event that, two years ago, jumped across the pond to the Americas. In 1016, the first event in Montreal, Canada took place.

Now, the event is travelling again but in the other direction – DreamHack is moving to Asia for Christmas. The event is taking place from the 21st to the 23rd of December in Mumbai, India. For this purpose, DreamHack partnered with NODWIN Gaming, a subsidiary of India’s fastest growing entertainment network: Viacom18.

Group CEO Sudhanshu Vats spoke about this partnership: “Viacom18 has never been one to shy away from experimenting with new concepts, ideas and formats. Given the strong affinity, youth audiences have with our content, brands and experiences, we think this is the right time for us to dip our toes in the fast-paced, thrilling world of e-sports. The world is changing fast and lines are blurring between different content genres. Given the abundance of data that has been unleashed by Jio, it is only natural for the fandom around e-sports to grow by leaps and bounds in India. As the country’s youngest full-play media organization, we want to stay ahead of the curve and tap into tomorrow’s big passion points today. Our association with DreamHack is a step in this direction.”

Much like previous events, the DreamHack Mumbai will feature various LAN competitions in a BYOC-style: In other words, Bring Your Own Computer. The hosts are expecting huge levels of interests given not only the rising interest in gaming in India, but also given the high profile of DreamHack itself.

For India, this will be by far the biggest esports event to have ever taken place in the country – after the announcement was made, fans were quick to express their excitement on sites like Twitter and Reddit. As for the event itself, the organisers are aiming for it to have as broad an appeal as possible – in addition to the regular features, there will also be a Retro Zone featuring old-timey arcade machines.

The general idea is to make the event interesting to fans of all sorts of genres and types of games. Gautam Virk, COO of NODWIN Gaming said: “We are constantly working for the excellent gaming community and we are most excited to provide them with something of this magnitude. We will make sure that no stones are left unturned in our efforts on this milestone event.”

This event could also serve to shine more of a spotlight on Indian esports, a field, that, though developing rapidly, is still not very present on an International scale.
