GameSquare Has Just Revealed FaZe Media

Now that GameSquare’s acquisition of FaZe Clan has closed, changes are taking place en masse at the firm. In recent weeks, a vast host of FaZe content creators and personalities were dismissed from the company, with some sharing news of their departure via emotional and lengthy videos. That came as part of a ‘cleaning house’ effort by the new CEO, Richard Bengston – one of the founders of FaZe Clan.

Today, GameSquare launched FaZe Media, a brand that was unveiled at the same time as it went live. It’s a creator-focused media company that’s being headed up by Bengston, and it has already secured a sizeable seed investment worth $11 million. That stack of cash came from Matt Kalish, who will now join FaZe Media as a member of the company board.

What’s The Point of FaZe Media?

Matt Kalish, the co-founder of DraftKings, has secured 49% ownership of FaZe Media, while GameSquare retains 51% of the label. This ambitious venture will ‘leverage the value of the FaZe brand’ and build a fresh creator economy that’s being empowered to reconnect with the audience it once had. It’ll be diving headlong into licensing and sponsorship deals and launching an all-new range of products and merchandise in the future.

The CEO of GameSquare, Justin Kenna, had this to say about the move:

‘We are thrilled to better capitalize this business for growth with $11 million in new capital from Matt, and to strengthen the FaZe Media board with his addition. Matt deeply believes in the power of founder and creator-led organizations and shares the vision to return FaZe back to its roots by empowering its creators.’

Despite the FaZe Clan ‘slate’ being wiped clean, the organisation’s esports teams remained in place. FaZe is still a dominant force in the esports industry, particularly in titles like Call of Duty, which is where the brand cut its teeth more than a decade ago. There were some suggestions that FaZe Clan would be ‘moving away from gaming‘, but those claims were referencing content creation rather than competitive gaming.
