Japanese gaming giants eyeing blockchain gaming

Japanese gaming giants are looking to make their mark in the world of blockchain. Many of these names have already done so making an impact on the massively talked about Web3 phenomena rocking the gaming world.

Japan has always been the place for all things ‘Geek’ whether it be gaming, television or collectibles. Many household names have spawned from Japan taking over most corners of the world.

It must be noted the largest media franchise in history, Pokemon is originally from Japan with many more high ranking names coming close behind.

Japanese adoption of the blockchain

Japan has always produced some of the greatest gaming companies known to man.

Let’s look closer at some of the companies who making the transition.

Square Enix

Square Enix has been the most recent company to take a fresh leaf out of the world of web3.

This comes after an unpredictable year in the NFT and Crypto world. However the appeal of the technology has allowed them to be further implemented into gaming. Many may have predicted due to the shared characteristics of gaming and blockchain.

SEGA

Masayoshi Kikuchi, SEGA’s producer, has made previous comments this year on their viewpoint of Web3.

SEGA have commented on their new “SuperGames” concept. Hints from the team have suggested the implementation of NFTs into the makeup of these up and coming triple A titles.

As well as NFTs, SEGA have hinted at showing off the abilities of cloud gaming also. Could SEGA be making a massive comeback, revitalising their once acclaimed dominance of the gaming market?

“It is a natural extension for the future of gaming that it will expand to involve new areas such as cloud gaming and NFTs. We are also developing SuperGame from the perspective of how far different games can be connected to each other.”

Bandai Namco

Back in April there were headlines stating that Bandai were gravitating towards the world of Web3.

They acquired a whopping $25 million in funding to aid their motives within crypto, the metaverse and other respectable projects.

This primarily will focus on Japanese companies, however the fund will also cover foreign projects also.

Bandai Namco have already made their mark in the NFT world, collaborating on a niche but fairly interesting project. This project is known as DEN-ON-BU, made by Gaudiy which allows users to access music in the form of NFTs on their marketplace.

Users are treated to new NFT updates, user generated content and even live performances from their favourite artists.

Whilst pleasing the masses, this more lowkey project will definitely be seen as a positive move by the game developer.

These heavyweights in the gaming industry are looking to adapt their approach to pleasing fans. With more and more gamers seeing the benefits of blockchain and play to earn functionalities it is no surprise we are starting to see a mass adoption of these.

Many were sceptical of the idea of crypto due to the increase in fraudulent acts from those taking part, with many coming off worse because of this.

Time however has allowed for better education on this industry and as a result we are seeing mainstream institutions getting on board for the long haul.
