Ahri counters in LoL – the top three picks

Ahri is one of the most iconic mid lane champions in LoL. Not only does she have incredible aesthetics, but she has the perfect mix of mobility, crowd control, and damage. She’s not too hard to master but she still has enough skill expression to make the gameplay feel satisfying.

Her versatility is what keeps allowing her to stay relevant in the game, making her a staple pick in the role. If you play mid lane often, chances are you have faced Ahri plenty of times. This guide will go through the best counters and tell which picks are most effective into her.

If you’re fairly new to the game, check out our guide on how counter picks work in League of Legends. You will understand why counter picks are important, and how you need to take advantage of them to increase your win rate. Make sure to also understand how classes counter one another in LoL so you always know what to pick in each game.

Talon – the AD counter

There are two main reasons why Talon prevails over Ahri. The first one is that he has higher burst damage during the laning phase with his W-Q-AA combo, which can potentially halve Ahri’s health bar. The second is that the AD assassin has better roaming potential thanks to his E: he can quickly follow Ahri if she attempts to help her teammates, or even be the first one to move to the side lanes. Regardless, it’s one of the worst matchups for Ahri to survive.

Sylas – breaking the shackles

If Sylas already had a fair bit of mobility in his kit, the fact that he can hijack Ahri’s ultimate makes him even more mobile. On top of that, he can easily sustain Ahri’s damage with his W and beat her in the short trades or skirmishes. In this matchup, Ahri should avoid fighting the enemy and then focus on shoving waves and try to use the lane priority to create advantages on other sides of the map.

Ryze – wave handshaking

Ryze is not necessarily a lane counter to Ahri but he has several tools to prevent her from snowballing out of control. His W allows him to root Ahri and prevent her from getting into his face and he has enough wave clearing to match Ahri’s pushes. Ryze outscales Ahri later on anyway, so all Ryze has to do is make sure he doesn’t let Ahri get a lead.

Worst Ahri counters

Hwei – one mistake, death

One of the newest mid lane champions happens to be one of the worst counters into Ahri. While he can poke and harass from a safe distance, Ahri will always be able to force trades whenever she has her ultimate up. And given that the Nine-Tailed Fox has three dashes from her R, she can quickly reposition herself while also dodging Hwei’s chain of abilities.

Orianna – too much mobility

Orianna suffers against Ahri for the same problem as Hwei: she doesn’t have the tools to survive Ahri’s aggression, especially if she happens to hit her Qs and charms. That said, Orianna can match, if not beat, Ahri’s wave clearing. In this matchup, focus on farming and dodging Ahri’s abilities to survive.

How do you counter Ahri with the items?

When going up against Ahri, you want magic resistance to reduce her burst damage and ensure you can survive. Below is a list of items to build you should consider, based on the class of champion you’re playing:

  • Bruisers: Maw of Malmortius, Kaenic Rookern, Force of Nature
  • AD assassins: Maw of Malmortius
  • ADC champions: Wit’s End, Mercurial Scimitarr
  • AP champions: Banshee’s Veil
  • Tanks: Kaenic Rookern, Force of Nature

What Champion counters Ahri?

The three best counters are Talon, Sylas, and Ryze. Other strong counters are Vladimir, Zoe, and Anivia.

Does Kassadin counter Ahri?

Kassadin can be considered an Ahri counter, although it’s not a direct counter. This is because Ahri can still abuse Kassadin during the laning phase with her higher damage and range advantage. Having said that, Kassadin will heavily outscale Ahri later in the game, so it essentially comes down to how much Kassadin can resist the enemy’s aggression. Given the state of the meta where snowball is not as strong as in the past, Kassadin has an indirect advantage.
