Akali counters in LoL – the three best choices

Even though League of Legends has a lot of variables to it, the one thing that stays relatively the same is counters. Counters are champions that play optimally into another champion, either by completely nullifying them or destroying them in lane altogether. That is just how the game works, some champion’s kits are going to function better into the opposing champion. Akali is no different in the sense that she has many counters in League of Legends. Today, we will explore the five best champions to beat Akali in LoL:

If you’re new to League of Legends, check out our guide on how counter picks work in League of Legends. While they won’t automatically win you games, they might give you just enough edge to increase your win rate by a small margin.

Twisted Fate

Although there are better options now for dealing with Akali, Twisted Fate is a tried and tested counter for Akali and has been for many years. Pick a Card is God’s gift for TF players in this match-up, as it telegraphs what Akali will have to do based on the card you have selected.

You can quickly pull out the gold card if she is looking to engage, or if you need to poke, the red or blue card is a perfect option too. You can poke and play the lane from a safe distance, and Akali can never touch you! And like Galio, you can match her roams with your cross-map ultimate.

There are better counters out there, simply due to champion mastery. TF is not an easy champion to play by any means. At first, he is really difficult to farm with, and many players will fall into the trap of playing around with their cards rather than focusing on farming.

Once you get the hang of him, the lane will be a breeze, she will have no kill pressure over you, and you will be able to clear waves with ease, providing you with timers to roam around the map and try to get kills.

Galio

Unlike Twisted Fate, a champion that is much easier for players to master is Galio. In my opinion, he is just one of those ideal champions who can do it all. He has great engage, he does a lot of damage, has hard CC, and can disengage when the fight doesn’t look good.

Galio has a lot of magic resistance, which makes him the ideal opponent for Akali. On top of that, he will become extremely tanky as the game proceeds. But don’t let his tankiness fool you, if you’re a squishy target, which Akali is, he can still look you up and burst you without any difficulty.

And when Akali goes into her shroud, Galio can reveal her location with his AoE damage, making it basically impossible for her to get the jump on you. And lastly, he can stop her roam with his ultimate, which will bring him into the fight from across the map.

Ever since the rework, Galio has become one of the most reliable counters in League of Legends against Akali.

The rework basically made this matchup a nightmare for Akali, which is why so many players pick Galio into her.

Taliyah

Taliyah right now is arguably the best counter into Akali in the current League of Legends meta. Like with Twisted Fate, there isn’t really any way that Akali can engage Taliyah without taking considerable damage. Unravelled Earth is essentially Death’s valley for Akali, because if she goes in, she’s unlikely to come out.

Taliyah’s Q also does an insane amount of damage, even in the early game, so you’re going to have no trouble poking Akali out of lane. Taliyah also has a good setup with the jungle, because her Q can show where Akali is in her shroud, and her W can push Akali back towards your turret to set up an easy kill.

Like the other champions, she can match the roam of Akali, which is one of the main needs for the champion. Akali doesn’t scale as well as the other champions, so if she can’t get it done in the lane, she’s going to need to get it done elsewhere, picking off bottom lanes who are fighting. But with Taliyah’s wall, she can join the fight just as easily, if not quicker than Akali. She can also zone/mark Akali out of fights too, making it very difficult for her to play the game when it comes to the teamfights.

Lissandra

The theme of this list is champions that can match Akali wherever she goes around the map. This is no different with Lissandra, who has very good roam potential and can match wherever Akali wants to go on the map. These champions essentially nullifies Akali at all stages of the game, she likely won’t even bother roaming because she will know you’re just behind them.

In lane, Lissandra has a lot of CC with her kit, which makes it hard for Akali to ever go fully in and engage. Because if she does, she is going to be stunned, and there’s likely your jungler waiting for her on the other side. Lissandra’s AoE abilities also reveal her in fights, which makes it hard for Akali to really get in there and cause mayhem on the backline.

Anivia

One of the champions that has started to pop up is Anivia, who is starting to become one of the best champions to deal with Akali in League of Legends. It’s not hard to see why, Anivia has excellent wave clear with her ultimate, which also deals a lot of damage, making it very hard for Akali to actually fight you up the lane.

On top of that, she can wall Akali off if she engages, leaving her in a very vulnerable state because she will struggle getting back over the wall. Anivia also has hard cc with her Q, which stuns champions for a considerable amount of time. Basically, if Akali gets hit with the Anivia CC, then she is dead. If you are looking for a niche pick that can deal with Akali, then we suggest Anivia.
