Azir counters in LoL – the top three picks
Ever since his release to LoL, Azir has been a great mid lane pick. Thanks to his scaling and damage output, he is a super valuable mid lane mage, capable of engaging or disengage in the teamfights. Whenever he reaches his item spikes, he can become a big menace capable of carrying the game.
That being said, his early game is lacking and there are several counters you can play to punish his weakness. Let’s go over the best three champions to play against him.
If you’re fairly new to the game, check out our guide on how counter picks work in League of Legends. It will explain to you why counter picks are important, and how you need to take advantage of them to increase your win rate. Make sure to also understand how classes counter one another in LoL so you always know which champions are stronger in each game.
Zoe – the best lane counter
While Zoe is not a super popular pick, she is a great lane counter to Azir. Thanks to her in-and-out playstyle, she can prevail in short trades over Azir, pressuring him throughout the entire laning phase. As long as you’re able to hit the Sleepy Trouble Bubble, you will win all the trades. Maximize the longer range and the stronger early-mid game to build a lead and not allow Azir to get back into the game again.
Diana – can’t beat the all-in
Even though Diana is not usually played as a mid laner, she can be a great counter pick into Azir. Similarly to Zoe, Diana excels in making quick trades and exchange abilities, bursting down the enemy champion faster. The worst thing is that Diana can always find the window to engage Azir and unless he has flash, he shouldn’t be able to react to your combo. Play aggressively and force him to trade health constantly in the laning phase to increase your chances of finding the window to kill.
Corki – the pro pick counter
If you watch professional League of Legends, you probably know that Corki is a common counter to Azir. Not only does he bring longer-range poke but he also scales as well as, if not better, than Azir. The Shurima Emperor can’t really kind lethal on Corki due to his low damage, allowing the yordle to farm safely throughout the laning phase. It’s not a lane counter but it will net return once you get to the later stages of the game.
Worst Azir counters
Lissandra – can’t touch him
Azir struggles whenever he cannot trade with his soldiers. Lissandra doesn’t have much range in her abilities, though, and she’s one of the champions who struggles the most against Azir. She can’t really engage on Azir as he can always get away with his E, and she will be outscaled once you get past the 25th minute. Avoid playing her at all costs in this matchup.

Orianna – it’s all about the teamfights
Orianna falls into a similar category as Lissandra but at least the former can contribute more around the teamfights with the Shockwave. Laning wise, Orianna should focus on farming as much as possible and reach her two-item spike to deal good AoE damage. You won’t win the lane against Azir, but it will come down to who can perform better around skirmishes and teamfights.
How do you counter Azir with the items?
When going up against Azir, it’s recommended to stack magic resistance and health to lower his damage. Below is a list of items to build based on the class of champions you’re playing:
- Bruisers: Maw of Malmortius, Force of Nature
- AD assassins: Maw of Malmortius
- ADC champions: Maw of Malmortius, Wit’s End
- AP champions: Banshee’s Veil
- Tanks: Kaenic Rookern (a must), Force of Nature
What Champion counters Azir?
The three best champions are Zoe, Diana, and Corki. There are others you can consider such as Akali, Viktor, and Kassadin, depending on which champion you’re proficient at.
Does Akali counter Azir?
The short answer is yes, Akali counters Azir. The Ionian assassin has several ways to jump on Azir and find the kill. That said, you must learn how to play the laning phase so that the enemy cannot harass you freely before you unlock your ultimate. Post level 6, you have the lethal to take him down.
