Ekko counters in LoL – the top three picks

Once a popular mid lane pick, Ekko is now mainly treated as a jungle. His fast wave clearing and great gank potential make him a fun and powerful pick for solo queue jungle carries. A strong Ekko player can 1v9 most of the games, to the point where you will be questioning whether the champion is overpowered. While the answer is negative, we have listed the best Ekko counters available this season so you have better chances of shutting him down.

If you’re fairly new to the game, check out our guide on how counter picks work in League of Legends. You will understand why counter picks are important, and how you need to take advantage of them to increase your win rate. Make sure to also understand how classes counter one another in LoL so you always know what to pick in each game.

Rek’Sai – the meta counter

Rek’Sai got buffed in the last few patches and has become a great front line tank with loads of sustain in her kit. Her knock-up and ability to scout enemies on the map when burrowed can be of incredible value against a slippery champion like Ekko. Rek’Sai comes with much higher early game damage, allowing her to get the upper hand on potential objective contests and skirmishes.

Bel’Veth – the Rek’Sai alternative

Just like Rek’Sai, Bel’Veth is also another champion who performs well against Ekko. This is because her kit is designed to counter melee champions that want to all-in their targets and burst them down. Considering she has the damage reduction on the E, Bel’Veth is almost always guaranteed to survive Ekko’s combos. Paired with the fact that she also has good DPS and scaling, she is a great pick to counter Ekko.

Kha’Zix – it’s time to hunt

We have yet another Void champion on our list and that is Kha’Zix. His isolation mechanic combined with his mobility makes him a great duelist against Ekko. He offers much more burst damage than his counterpart and has enough tools to dodge some of Ekko’s key abilities, such as his Q or ultimate.

Worst Ekko counters

Shyvana – healing up the damage

Ekko is far too mobile and slippery for Shyvana. She will rarely be able to kill Ekko given that he can dodge her E and block a part of the damage with his shield. Regardless of whether you go with the AP or AD build, Shyvana can do little against the Zaunite champion.

Viego – too mobile for him

Speaking of mobility, Viego is another champion who struggles heavily against a champion like Ekko. The latter can easily draw distance thanks to his dashes and passive, making it challenging for Viego to fight back. It’s a suboptimal pick overall so don’t pick it if possible.

How do you counter Ekko with the items?

When going up against Ekko, it’s recommended to stack a mix of MR and HP. Below is a list of items to build you should consider, based on the class of champion you’re playing:

  • Bruisers: Maw of Malmortius, Kaenic Rakoorn
  • AD assassins: Maw of Malmortius
  • ADC champions: Maw of Malmortius, Wit’s End
  • AP champions: Banshee’s Veil
  • Tanks: Kaenic Rakoorn, Spirit Visage, Hollow Radiance

What Champion counters Ekko?

The three best counters are Bel’Veth, Rek’Sai, and Kha’Zix. Other strong counters are Ivern, Lillia, and Nunu and Willump.

Does Lee Sin counter Ekko?

Lee Sin and Ekko aren’t usually considered counters although Lee Sin is stronger early on and can snowball more easily. Ekko, on the other hand, requires more time to scale up and get into a position to deal enough burst damage. It ultimately comes down to who can build more advantage and create a substantial item lead over the opponent.
