Gnar counters in LoL – the top three picks

Gnar has always had a particular presence in the top lane. There are periods where he’s one of the best picks in the role before disappearing once he gets nerfed. This is because the champion has a strong teamfighting and laning phase but it’s also hard to coordinate in solo queue due to his passive. In this list, we will be looking at some of the best counters to beat him so you know what to do when going up against Gnar.

If you’re fairly new to the game, check out our guide on how counter picks work in League of Legends. You will understand why counter picks are important, and how you need to take advantage of them to increase your win rate. Make sure to also understand how classes counter one another in LoL so you always know what to pick in each game.

Camille – the evergreen counter

While Camille doesn’t necessarily beat Gnar in the laning phase, she definitely out scales him later in the game. Not only will she deal more damage but she will be able to exert more side lane pressure. Her dueling potential against Mini Gnar is also good since she can lock him down with the ultimate. Learn to play around the melee vs range matchup early on and you should be good to play her.

Irelia – the best and most difficult counter

Speaking of duelists, Irelia is known to be a great counter to Gnar. Thanks to her mobility, she can easily jump close to Gnar’s face with her Qs. If you manage to hit your E, Gnar won’t be able to run away even if he uses his own jump to draw a distance. Be fast with your combos, however, or you won’t be able to kill him.

Vayne – scaling up

If you fancy some spicy picks in the top lane, Vayne also works well against Gnar. As a natural counter to tanks and bruisers, Vayne will shred through Gnar’s health bar later in the game. And considering both champions are quite weak early on, there shouldn’t be a lot of pressure on Vayne, meaning she will be able to reach her spikes faster.

Worst Gnar counters

Jax – the worst matchup

Even though Jax has good split pushing potential to match Gnar, the latter has too much of an advantage throughout the laning phase and later in the game. This is because Gnar can kite Jax easily in mini form and then deal substantial damage in Mega Form. For Jax, he will struggle to have both lane priority and is subject to consistent harass. If possible, avoid this matchup.

Pantheon – a bad choice

While Pantheon is strong in early all-ins against a champion like Gnar, a strong top lane player won’t give Pantheon a chance to get even close to the Yordle to attempt a kill. Once the laning phase is over, Ganr will just slowly take over the game thanks to the better scaling and better teamfighting potential.

How do you counter Gnar with the items?

When going up against Gnar, it’s recommended to armor to reduce his damage and armor penetration to deal more damage. Below is a list of items to build you should consider, based on the class of champion you’re playing:

  • Bruisers: Warden’s Mail, Frozen Heart, Black Cleaver
  • AD assassins: Serylda’s Grudge
  • ADC champions: Lord Dominik’s Regard
  • AP champions: Zhonya’s Hourglass
  • Tanks: Frozen Heart, Dead Man’s Plate

What Champion counters Gnar?

The three best counters are Irelia, Camille, and Vayne. Other strong counters are Fiora, Riven, Willump, and Sett.

Does K’Sante counter Gnar?

K’Sante is usually countered by Gnar. This is because the mini Yordle can easily kit K’Sante with his combos while also dealing % max HP with the passive from the W. K’Sante, however, will always scale hard later in the game and have outplay potential by going All-Out. In most scenarios, though, Gnar will have the advantage.
