Kayn counters in LoL – the top three picks
Going up against Kayn in the jungle is always troublesome. Regardless of what form he has, he will be able to exert his dominance somehow. In the past seasons, Blue Kayn was the dominant form to 1v9 games in solo queue: his ability to counter invade and have presence across the entire map is nearly unparalleled. To help you out, we have listed his best counters, hoping it increases your chances of victory against him.
If you’re fairly new to the game, check out our guide on how counter picks work in League of Legends. You will understand why counter picks are important, and how you need to take advantage of them to increase your win rate. Make sure to also understand how classes counter one another in LoL so you always know what to pick in each game.
Vi – the teamfight counter
The best thing about Vi is her lockdown potential. Everything lies in her ultimate: the point-and-click ability allows her to apply a long enough crowd control to kill Kayn, especially if he is running the assassin form. It’s fine to fall behind on farm in this matchup as long as you’re able to punish him every time he tries to assassinate someone.

Bel’Veth – the evergreen counter
As someone who is designed to work best against champions who want to fight melee, Bel’Veth comes up as a natural counter to Kayn. Thanks to her E, there is no way the void champion can be one-shotted by the Darkin assassin. Despite having less mobility, she can compensate for it with more consistent damage output.
Viego – the alternative
If you’re not a Bel’Veth fan, Viego can be considered a great alternative. Not only does he have a stronger early game but he also excels in duels. When playing Viego, you need to take advantage of Kayn’s weaker early game to find more kills on the map and snowball. Try to also look for invade before he gains the transformation: when ahead, Viego can take over the game.
Worst Kayn counters
Brand – the worst matchup
While Brand has a faster jungle clear early on, things will start to go south as soon as Kayn unlocks his form. Unless he falls behind in gold, he should have enough damage to one-shot Brand every time he invades the jungle. The mage doesn’t have escape routes, making him extremely susceptible to Kayn. Don’t play this matchup if possible.

Karthus – a bad choice
Similar to Brand, Karthus is also an immobile mage who struggles against hard-invades. One thing for Karthus, though, is that at least he has the passive to stay relevant, but Kayn will still be able to snowball out of control. Ban the champion if you want to play Karthus.
How do you counter Kayn with the items?
When going up against Kayn, it’s recommended to stack armor. Below is a list of items to build you should consider, based on the class of champion you’re playing:
- Bruisers: Death Dance, Guardian’s Angel
- AD assassins: Guardian’s Angel
- ADC champions: Guardian’s Angel,
- AP champions: Zhonya’s Hourglass
- Tanks: Warden’s Mail, Frozen Heart
What Champion counters Kayn?
The three best counters are Vi, Bel’Veth, and Viego. Other strong counters are Evelynn, Fiddlesticks, and Nidalee.
Does Lee Sin counter Kayn?
The Lee Sin-Kayn matchup is skill-based. The Blind Monk has better early-game presence and can also invade Kayn early on, slowing down his tempo. In solo queue, the Kayn player would usually play around the lane with ranged enemy champions to stack the blue form: as Lee Sin, be prepared to show up for counter ganks. Force him into delaying his transformation is also a decent strategy so that you can continue building up a lead for your own team.
