The best Mordekaiser counters in League of Legends Season 15
Mordekaiser is on the rise in League of Legends and is becoming one of the more viable picks again. He is an AP bruiser that is so hard to beat, and you’re more likely to ban him in every game than try and go up against him in the lane, because he is one of the biggest punishers in the laning phase; it’s really hard to play against him.
Mordekaiser is in a great spot in the meta, and certainly a champion that can perform well in lane against most of the bruisers that are currently dominating the top lane. Yorick is a champion who has come to the fold, perhaps too much, since he is pretty broken. But does Mordekaiser counter him? We will find out.
But what about the champions that can actually deal with Mordekaiser? Let’s take a look at the five best champions to play against Mordekaiser in League of Legends:
Sett

Sett is probably the ultimate Mordekaiser counter right now in the current League of Legends meta. You wouldn’t think so given his low range, and that’s where Morde shines, but it’s actually where Sett shines too. Sett loves to fight, it’s in the lore of the champion, and as such, benefits from champions that can go blow for blow with him.
Sett can output damage at a much quicker rate than Mordekaiser, and his W, when fully stacked, can completely turn the fight against Mordekaiser. While Mordekaiser loves to fight from within his ultimate, Sett can outsustain that, and when Morde’s ultimate is over, that is when the show will start. On top of that, later in the teamfights, Sett will just ultimate Mordekaiser away before he can ever get to one of his teammates. Let’s take a look at how Sett can deal with Mordekaiser in the laning phase:
- Go for trades early, but don’t allow him to stack up that passive; it’s still a very strong thing in the early game even if Sett is stronger.
- Build up your W, because you’re going to need it to turn the tide in the trades
- Don’t be too far up the lane, he can easily get his jungler involved by sending you to the Death Realm.

Yorick
Despite removing his Maiden when he enters the Death Realm, Yorick is actually a counter to Mordekaiser, and is one of the most picked champions against Mordekaiser in the current meta. Yorick is one of the best champions in the top lane right now, and is rightfully receiving a bit of a nerf ahead of the latest patch.
He can simply outlast most champions, Morde included. Any time Mordekaiser goes for an engage, Yorick can block it by putting down his wall, and then throwing the ghouls back in his face, which is one of the most annoying parts about facing Yorick.
And while the Maiden does technically disappear when Yorick gets ulted, it’s still actually doing damage to Mordekaiser, which is rather overpowered, because once they’re out of the Realm, it’ll still be there to back Yorick up. Let’s take a look at how you can play the lane against Mordekaiser as Yorick:
- Farm as best as possible to stack Q, the more ghouls the better.
- Don’t get in melee range, poke with ghouls and ultimate.
- If he goes forward on you, use your cage, it’ll stop him from being able to get to you.
Fiora

Fiora is a very good pick against Mordekaiser because she can dodge practically all of his abilities, taking very little damage in the process. Her Q, for example, can be used to dodge his Q or E. The same with Riposte, it can completely negate the incoming damage and effect from Q and E.
Despite being very powerful, Mordekaiser is actually very clunky in the lane, so a quick champion like Fiora actually makes his life really difficult. On top of that, her ultimate allows Fiora to heal up quite a substantial amount. She will also have an insane amount of split push pressure, which will force Mordekaiser to either go all in on fighting the team, or have to deal with the Fiora splitting, which is a win-win for everybody. Let’s take a look at how you would play the lane as Fiora:
- Use Riposte when you can to negate his abilities. If you time it right, you’ll stun him.
- Abuse Q as much as you can; your quickness is your advantage against Mordekaiser.
- Only do short trades. Once you’ve blown your abilities, the lane is much harder to play.

Yone

Like Fiora, Yone is very good at avoiding the damage Mordekaiser is throwing out by his own mobility. Mordekaiser is definitely a more sluggish champion in lane, therefore, Yone can abuse this through his range and mobility.
You really don’t want to trade with Yone, which is why Morde has a really tough time with it. Yone’s E means he can safely trade in quick bursts even from a distance. Yone can do all of this before Mordekaiser can blink, which is a massive problem! Mordekaiser can’t really use his E, because Yone can use his own to get out of dodge. And even if Mordekaiser uses his ultimate, Yone has enough sustain and his own ultimate to bridge the gap between the two champions. Let’s take a look at how Yone deals with Mordekaiser in lane:
- Use your E to trade safely. Mordekaiser can never pull you in because you won’t be close to him for long.
- Your abilities allow you to safely avoid being pulled in.
- Use your W shield to absorb any incoming damage.
Volibear

If you want early game dueling power, then look no further than Volibear. Not only can this guy match the early game power of Mordekaiser, but exceeds the levels at Morde can get to in the early game. Mordekaiser’s abilities are quite telegraphed, which gives Voli enough time to use Q to stun him in place, and then go down on applying damage. Both of these champions have good sustain, but Voli’s in the early laning phase just hits different, the heal is much bigger, and can disengage if needed.
All Volibear players need to do once the ultimates are online is wait. Be patient, because you’re going to need your ultimate once you’re in the Shadow Realm if you are to win. You will be much stronger than Morde even inside of his ultimate, so don’t get greedy unless you are certain you have a kill. Let’s take a look at how Volibear handles the lane against Mordekaiser:
- You should have the early game pressure in the first few levels. Don’t be scared of his aggression.
- Use Q and W for quick bursts onto him, don’t let him stack his passive, it’s unnecessary.
- Save your ultimate for when you’re in the Death Realm, you’re going to need it.
- Don’t fight him under his tower, it’ll be much harder for you. Try and ensure the wave is near your tower.
