Ornn counters in LoL – the top three picks
Even though he’s not a popular solo queue pick, Ornn is a reliable low-resource tank with extremely high value. Thanks to his passive, he can grant himself and his allies additional stats while also offering a fair bit of crowd control and engage potential.
That said, he can be punished early on, and understanding which are the best counters can be essential to initiate a snowball and make sure he cannot get to the late game. This guide will walk you through the three best picks for this season.
If you’re fairly new to the game, check out our guide on how counter picks work in League of Legends. You will understand why counter picks are important, and how you need to take advantage of them to increase your win rate. Make sure to also understand how classes counter one another in LoL so you always know what to pick in each game.
Fiora – the tank counter
Top laners should be aware of Fiora’s ability to punish immobile tanks. She has everything to counter them: high mobility, true damage, sustain and %HP damage with her ultimate. Ornn can’t really do much against her and it will all come down to the players’ ability to slow down each other’s scaling. In a vacuum matchup, however, Fiora clearly has the upper hand.

Gwen – fighting scaling with scaling
Gwen has similar tools to Fiora, with the exception that Gwen is stronger at splitpushing and dealing more damage in extended fights. This makes her a great candidate against someone like Ornn. That said, Gwen requires to scale up a bit more compared to Fiora, which can be troublesome in scenarios where your team is falling behind. In most cases, though, Gwen is a great pick to count on.
Vladimir – the AP alternative
Vladimir is the alternative to Gwen if you need magic damage output. Ornn doesn’t have the tools to punish Vladimir, allowing him to slowly scale and reach his item spikes. Compared to Fiora and Gwen, however, Vladimir is more teamfight oriented as he will be using his AoE damage to suck up enemies’ health bars.
Worst Ornn counters
Wukong – the worst matchup
A large part of Ornn’s damage is magic which Wukong cannot tank as he only stacks armor with his passive. On top of that, Wukong’s trading pattern can always put him in danger if the enemy happens to time his combos well. Avoid this matchup if possible.
Cassiopeia – a bad choice
Cassiopeia beats Ornn from the very beginning of the laning phase. She can easily hit her Qs given Ornn’s low mobility and heal up most of the damage taken with Twin Fangs. Later in the game, she will just outscale him and have enough DPS to shred through his health bar.
How do you counter Ornn with the items?
When going up against Ornn, it’s recommended to stack a mix of both health and magic resistance or offensive items to cut through his tankiness. Below is a list of items to build you should consider, based on the class of champion you’re playing:
- Bruisers: Force of Nature
- AD assassins: Serylda’s Grudge
- ADC champions: Lord Dominik’s Regard
- AP champions: Riftmaker, Void Staff, Cryobloom
- Tanks: Force of Nature, Jak’Sho, the Protean
What Champion counters Ornn?
The three best counters are Fiora, Vladimir, and Gwen. Other strong counters are Kennen, Udyr, and Camille.
Does Fiora counter Ornn?
The short answer is yes, Fiora does counter Ornn. Her kit is designed to go against tanks like Ornn and she has enough damage and sustain to win both of the trades. That said, you need to make sure you can consistently hit the vital points for the true damage.
