Ryze counters in LoL – the top three picks
While Ryze is not a common pick in solo queue, he’s always able to have his own saying whenever he’s played. In this list, we will be going over the best Ryze counters to play this season, hoping it helps you win more often against this pick.
If you’re fairly new to the game, check out our guide on how counter picks work in League of Legends. You will understand why counter picks are important, and how you need to take advantage of them to increase your win rate. Make sure to also understand how classes counter one another in LoL so you always know what to pick in each game.
Viktor – the best counter
The main reason why you would pick Viktor against Ryze is his ability to keep up with Ryze’s wave clearing at all stages of the game and his slightly superior range advantage on his own abilities. On top of that, Viktor also scales fairly well, making it the ideal pick to counter Ryze at all stages of the game.

Cassiopeia – the Viktor alternative
If you’re not a Viktor fan, Cassiopeia can be a great alternative to counter Ryze. Even though she doesn’t have the same range as Viktor, Cassiopeia makes it up with more DPS and extra sustain coming from her Twin Fangs. As long as she lands her poison, she should be able to come out ahead in every single trade.
Taliyah – the meta counter
Taliyah is currently one of the strongest picks in the meta so it’s only logical for her to work against a champion like Ryze. She has much more range and damage early on, allowing her to gain lane priority to roam. While Ryze scales later, he won’t have much control of the game if Taliyah is ahead in experience and gold.
Worst Ryze counters
Talon – the worst matchup
Even though Talon should have the upper hand against Ryze, especially early on, he can’t really punish Ryze and use him to snowball the game. The control mage can always stop his aggression by quickly casting W, and once Ryze gets a few items, Talon won’t be able to match the wave clearing. Avoid this match-up when possible.
Corki – a bad choice
Unlike Talon, Corki is the type of champion that requires scaling like Ryze. The issue is that the champion will lose to Ryze’s wave clearing in the mid game and will never be a threat to the opponent. Both are expected to scale towards the late game but Ryze should have an easier time getting there first.
How do you counter Ryze with the items?
When going up against Ryze, it’s recommended to stack a lot of magic resistance. Below is a list of items to build you should consider, based on the class of champion you’re playing:
- Bruisers: Raenic Rakoorn, Force of Nature
- AD assassins: Maw of Malmortius
- ADC champions: Maw of Malmortius, Wit’s End
- AP champions: Banshee’s Veil
- Tanks: Raenic Rakoorn, Force of Nature
What Champion counters Ryze?
The three best counters are Viktor, Cassiopeia, and Taliyah. Other strong counters are Ahri, Irelia, and Aurelion Sol.
Does Syndra counter Ryze?
Syndra has a decent advantage over Ryze in their laning phase thanks to her better early wave clear and burst potential. On top of that, she can always knock Ryze back if the latter tries to get into a trade with her. Ryze, however, will scale a bit harder later in the game but it shouldn’t be a big difference to justify all the other downsides.
