Shaco counters in LoL – the top three picks
Veteran League players know how annoying Shaco can be in the game. Luckily for you, we will show you some of the best counters.
If you’re fairly new to the game, check out our guide on how counter picks work in League of Legends. You will understand why counter picks are important, and how you need to take advantage of them to increase your win rate. Make sure to also understand how classes counter one another in LoL so you always know what to pick in each game.
Vi – a punch in the face
The main reason why Vi is considered a counter to Shaco lies in her ability to shut him down with the ultimate. The point-and-click ability has a long enough crowd control to blow him up, and even if Shaco tries to use his own R, Vi will still knock the right target. Not to mention that Vi will be tankier later on, making it hard for Shaco to kill her.
Briar – fight me if you can
Briar excels at skirmishes and if Shaco tries to punish her, he won’t come out unscathed. She can reduce most of Shaco’s damage with her E, and then trade back by using all the auto attacks. Later in the game, she will likely one-shot Shaco if she happens to hit him with the ultimate.
Karthus – the R button
Even though Karthus can be punished by Shaco early on, the mage jungler will always have value in the game thanks to his ultimate. As long as he’s able to power farm the jungle and pick up a few kills, getting punished by Shaco won’t make a difference. The magical R button is what saves Karthus and makes him a great Shaco counter.
Worst Shaco counters
Kha’Zix – hunter becomes prey
Kha’Zix does fine against Shaco, if he manages to get past the early game. The issue is there, though: the first minutes are a nightmare for the Void champion. Shaco can basically do what he pleases and invade him to his liking. It really depends on how much can the Shaco player capitalize in that time window.
Maokai – a sitting duck
Just like Kha’Zix, Maokai can be invaded constantly by Shaco, with the exception that Maokai won’t be able to get away since he doesn’t have dashes or ways to get away. It’s a tough matchup, so try to avoid it at all costs.
How do you counter Shaco with the items?
When going up against Shaco, try to understand which build he’s going for (AD or AP). Below is a list of items to build you should consider, based on the class of champion you’re playing:
- Bruisers: Maw of Malmortius, Death Dance
- AD assassins: Maw of Malmortius, Guardian’s Angel
- ADC champions: Maw of Malmortius, Guardian’s Angel
- AP champions: Banshee’s Veil, Zhonya’s Hourglass
- Tanks: Kaenic Rookern, Iceborn Gauntlet
What Champion counters Shaco?
The three best champions are Vi, Briar, and Karthus. Avoid playing weak early-game champions that can be invaded.
Does Lee Sin counter Shaco?
The short answer is it depends. It’s a skill matchup that swings into one or the other’s favor depending on how they play: Shaco can find leads by making invades and ganks while Lee Sin can win through skirmishes.
