Sylas counters in LoL – the top three picks
Sylas’ addition to LoL was groundbreaking: a champion that could steal ultimates from all the other champions in the game was unheard of. Yet, Riot turned it into reality while finding a way to balance him. There are periods, however, when the champion can be extremely oppressive and tough to deal with. To that, we have created a list of the best Sylas counters, ranking the top three and explaining why they are so effective against him.
If you’re fairly new to the game, check out our guide on how counter picks work in League of Legends. You will understand why counter picks are important, and how you need to take advantage of them to increase your win rate. Make sure to also understand how classes counter one another in LoL so you always know what to pick in each game.
Veigar – outscaling is key
Veigar and Sylas have opposite playstyles. The former is a control mage who wants to deal damage from a safe distance while Sylas always wants to join the mix and fight in close combat. In their mid lane matchup, however, Veigar has the upper hand. Not only does he have enough range to play safely but he will eventually outscale his counterpart. As long as Sylas doesn’t snowball out of control early on, Veigar wins this one.

Taliyah – the anti-engage
Taliyah has incredible terrain control with her abilities, allowing her to stop Sylas from dashing in. On top of that, she can abuse her range advantage to push waves and get lane priority to roam around the map.
Jayce – the lane counter
While Jayce is not that popular of a champion in the mid lane, he works great against Sylas. Not only can he harass Sylas with his cannon form but he also has enough burst damage in the hammer form when things get heated. You will need good laning fundamentals and be aggressive, though, so go for this pick only if you meet the requirements.
Worst Sylas counters
Malphite – the worst matchup
Picking Malphite into Sylas is the worst thing you could ever do. The tank champion doesn’t have enough damage to burst Sylas down and the enemy champion will be able to steal your powerful ultimate every time it’s available. The goal is to just survive and prevent the enemy from snowballing.

Yone – it’s best not to pick him
While the Yone-Sylas matchup is not as bad as the one with Malphite, it’s still quite tough to win it since Sylas will always be able to heal up most of the damage dealt by Yone. The blademaster has quick and short trading patterns but they can be easily dodged by the enemy champion. Not to mention that Sylas can still Yone’s powerful ultimate and gain an extra dash in his combo rotations.
How do you counter Sylas with the items?
When going up against Sylas, it’s recommended to stack magic resistance. Below is a list of items to build you should consider, based on the class of champion you’re playing:
- Bruisers: Maw of Malmortius, Force of Nature
- AD assassins: Maw of Malmortius
- ADC champions: Wit’s End
- AP champions: Banshee’s Veil, Abyssal Mask
- Tanks: Force of Nature, Raenic Rakoorn
What Champion counters Sylas?
The three best counters are Veigar, Taliyah, and Jayce. Other strong counters are Anivia, Yasuo, and Vladimir.
Does Katarina counter Sylas?
Katarina can struggle against Sylas depending on how the two champions trade in the laning phase. The former has quicker trades but Sylas will gain the edge if he successfully hits his E and W. Post level six, Katarina cannot force plays if Sylas has his E ready since he can use it to stop the ultimate. Overall, the matchup is Sylas favored.
