Syndra counters in LoL – the top three picks

Syndra is a staple in the mid lane. She has been often considered a queen among mid laners in the past season, and every time control mages are meta, she rises up as a great alternative. In this list, we will be looking at her best counters, so you can always know how to deal with her in your games.

If you’re fairly new to the game, check out our guide on how counter picks work in League of Legends. You will understand why counter picks are important, and how you need to take advantage of them to increase your win rate. Make sure to also understand how classes counter one another in LoL so you always know what to pick in each game.

Xerath – abusing the range advantage

Xerath counters Syndra thanks to his long-range poke and good burst damage. As long as he can hit the abilities from a safe distance, Xerath can freely land damage and play with the minion wave to his liking, giving him a great advantage throughout the entire laning phase.

Diana – getting on her face

If Xerath uses his range to abuse Syndra, Diana does the exact opposite. She wants to jump on the enemy’s face and burst her down with her combos and dashes. Diana’s shields should allow her to survive Syndra’s poke and trade effectively in the first stages of the game. Once she gets a few levels and enough AP, she should have enough damage to burst the enemy down.

Irelia – too much mobility

If you’re looking for an alternative, Irelia offers similar, if not better, mobility compared to Diana. She can quickly dash and dodge abilities with her Q, outmaneuvering her through the minions. Once Irelia gets close to Syndra, there isn’t much she can do to survive.

Worst Syndra counters

Yone – Knocking him back to reality

Yone’s trading patterns all count on his ability to close the gap to his targets and stick to them. Syndra, unfortunately, can use her E to knock him back and prevent him from dealing damage. Whether it’s during the early game or during mid-game fights, Yone won’t be able to freely enter the fray like he would like to.

Malzahar – takes too long to scale

Malzahar has a slightly shorter range compared to Syndra which already puts him at a slight disadvantage. If you, however, consider the fact that the former also needs to scale more to deal damage, then you would quickly realize that this matchup becomes borderline unplayable. Avoid it.

How do you counter Syndra with the items?

When going up against Syndra, it’s recommended to stack magic resistances. Below is a list of items to build you should consider, based on the class of champion you’re playing:

  • Bruisers: Maw of Malmortius, Kaenic Rakoorn
  • AD assassins: Maw of Malmortius
  • ADC champions: Maw of Malmortius, Wit’s End
  • AP champions: Banshee’s Veil
  • Tanks: Kaenic Rakoorn, Force of Nature, Spirit Visage

What Champion counters Syndra?

The three best counters are Xerath, Diana, and Irelia. Other strong counters are Ekko, Akali, and Qiyana.

Does Zed counter Syndra?

Zed usually has an advantage when he faces Syndra. His mobility can be troublesome for an immobile mage like her and he has similar levels of burst damage. That said, Syndra can take advantage of the range early on, harassing Zed every time he approaches to farm minions. If Syndra can chunk him down consistently, then Zed won’t be able to kill her.
