Talon counters in LoL – the top three picks
Talon is the real deal when it comes to roams and mobility. Thanks to his mechanic of jumping walls, he can easily get behind the enemy lines and find the right opportunity to sneak in and assassinate enemies. A great Talon player can be troublesome for solo queue as he will take over the mid game with his incredible map presence. To win against him, it’s important to know which champions are effective: these are the best Talon counters in 2024.
If you’re fairly new to the game, check out our guide on how counter picks work in League of Legends. You will understand why counter picks are important, and how you need to take advantage of them to increase your win rate. Make sure to also understand how classes counter one another in LoL so you always know what to pick in each game.
Katarina– burst vs burst damage
Talon is the type of champion who wants to burst down his targets by applying damage and procc’ing his passive during the trades. When facing Katarina, however, Talon encounters a problem: the enemy has more burst damage and better short trades than him. This allows Katarina to dash in and out during the laning phase to harass Talon who can’t fight back and will put himself in a losing position right from the start.

Tristana – the ultimate lane counter
If you want to bully out Talon during the laning phase, however, the best pick you can go for is Tristana. Not only can she abuse her range advantage to weave in auto attacks when Talon approaches to last hit but she will be able to jump away and disengage thanks to her W and ultimate. The only way for Talon to win this is if he somehow finds an opportunity to get some kills elsewhere on the map and get the snowball rolling. Otherwise, this matchup is borderline unplayable.
Qiyana – the assassin battle
Qiyana has several ways to outplay Talon with the ultimate – it’s a matter of who can land the combos faster. The advantage she has over the enemy, though, lies in her ability to knock the Noxian champion back with the ultimate, negating a big part of Talon’s ultimate. Her trades during the laning phase are also better and she can draw a bit of distance with her W and E.
Worst Talon counters
Swain – healing up the damage
Swain scales fine into the late game against Talon but his early game is atrocious against the assassin champion. The latter’s burst damage during the laning phase is too high and if Swain tries to grab him with his E, Talon will be able to get in range and follow up with his own combos. Not to mention that Talon can roam around freely thanks to the lane priority and Swain won’t be able to do anything about it.
Malzahar – too immobile
Just like Swain, Malzahar suffers from the same issue. Talon can easily proc the mage’s passive with one iteration of W or Q and then he will be able to push waves and use the mobility to his advantage. It gets a bit better later in the game as Malzahar ramps up his damage and can suppress him with the ultimate, but chances are Talon will be already far too ahead to stop him.
How do you counter Talon with the items?
When going up against Talon, it’s recommended to stack a mix of armor and HP. Below is a list of items to build you should consider, based on the class of champion you’re playing:
- Bruisers: Death Dance, Guardian’s Angel, Sterak’s Gage
- AD assassins: Guardian’s Angel
- ADC champions: Guardian’s Angel
- AP champions: Zhonya’s Hourglass
- Tanks: Dead Man’s Plate, Sunfire Aegis, Frozen Heart
What Champion counters Talon?
The three best counters are Katarina, Swain, and Qiyana. Other strong counters are Jayce, Pantheon, and Akshan.
Does Sylas counter Talon?
Sylas does have a major advantage over Talon during the laning phase. He can always heal up most of the damage dealt by the enemy by casting W towards the end of the trade and he has enough burst damage himself to shut down the AD assassin. Not to mention that Sylas can hijack Talon’s ultimate and use it to his advantage to get behind the enemy lines during key teamfights and skirmishes.
