Best Tanks in LoL to Climb the Rankings and Establish Dominance

Tanks are the backbone and the health bar of the team. They bring the engage, the crowd control, and sometimes the damage as well. But the line can be thin between a goliath that relentlessly rampages through his opponents and a slow champion who walks forward and dies before doing anything. So to be both the unstoppable force and the immovable object, here are the best tanks in LoL!

List of the Best Tanks in LoL – Patch 25.11

Cho’Gath

The Terror of the Void and the Terror of the Rift, Cho’Gath gets a massive health bar and turns it into a burst. As a hybrid of a tank and a mage, Cho’Gath has some of the least reliable crowd control and zero mobility, but he will kill you and your team if you don’t take him out first, and he will not die fast.

In both mid and top, Cho’Gath is an excellent laner, having good damage and wave clear, a strong trade pattern, kill pressure, and very high sustain to recover from pokes or trades. And once he gets his ultimate, he unlocks his true power: devouring enemies.

Other tanks have shields and damage reduction to mitigate damage and apply CC to their enemies. Cho’Gath takes it all on the chin and still has extra to spare.

There are two primary build paths you can take:

  • Heartsteel and Sunfire, with Grasp of the Undying, to improve your strengths and have even more health and damage.
  • Symbiotic Soles, Shurelya’s Battlesong and Riftmaker, with Hail of Blades, to bank on your base health and damage, and get additional mobility. This build was nerfed, but it remains a good option!

It’s worth noting that Patch 25.11 reduced his level-up armour gain by 0.5 (from 5.0 to 4.5) so you may have to adjust your usual Cho strategy. Nonetheless, he remains a force on the Rift.

Volibear

Enter the champion with the strangest build in the game! Volibear is both a jungler and a top laner, giving you a good ace up your sleeve for two roles.

Volibear starts by buying one mage item – Rod of Ages or Cosmic Drive – follows it up with a marksman’s item – Navori Flickerblade – before completing the assortment with tank gear.

Naturally, that makes the Jack of all Trades rune mandatory on him.

And just like his build indicates, the bear does a little bit of everything. He’s got very good DPS for tank and even fighter standards, engages decently, runs away just as well, gets his tankiness through deceptive sustain, and is among the premier tower divers thanks to his ultimate that disables turrets.

He’s not the best initiator, not the best at disrupting, not the best at taking the most hits. But he’s good at all of what makes him good, and that package means he’s one of the best tanks in League of Legends.

Amumu

No one wants to give Amumu a hug but he’s damn good at obtaining them.

Amumu is very easy to pick up. Good jungle clear, and a very straightforward game plan – toss bandages at opponents, and keep following them until either of you dies, ideally them. He can engage from far away, and has a second charge on his Bandage Toss to either get a second chance or follow-up CC. Stunning and damaging everyone in a wide area, his ultimate has been one of the best teamfight abilities for over 15 years.

Backing up his engage power with a strong balance of bulk and damage, Amumu’s weaknesses are a lack of escape and non-existent duelling tools. But he’s one of the best tanks in LoL for players of all ranks. Playing him as a support can be effective for the CC alone, but this will severely hamper his long-term tankiness due to reduced gold income. Still, as a tank, he’s an excellent choice for teams that need an initiator with a lot of health and resistances.

Honourable Mentions: Malphite, Rammus, and Braum

Malphite and Rammus are just below the other three, but they’re the best anti-AD tanks, with Malphite being the choice for solo lanes, and Rammus for jungle.

Malphite resembles Amumu in that he’s an ideal engager. Having a long-range AoE stun that can’t be dodged without movement abilities and good reflexes is stellar, with the downside being that his only engage tool is an ultimate.

rammus lol

Rammus, on the other hand, rolls at his targets at very high speed before taunting them and returning severe damage. He’s the nightmare of AD carries, who will deplete their entire health bar attacking Rammus before making a dent in his. However, for all his AD resistances, every other type is kind of meh. He doesn’t have an instant engage and also no escape tools, but a prolonged fight with Rammus in it will cause massive damage to the enemy team, one way or another.

Malphite and Rammus are both excellent champions to pick late into the draft, being the best picks against AD-heavy comps. But they can be countered just as hard as they are weak against mages and AP bruisers.

Braum is made for protecting and disengaging more than engaging the enemy himself (although he can also make it work in specific circumstances). He’s basically a big barrier that will soak up shots and abilities like nothing, and disengage if needed.

Braum’s abilities all have good value and incredible potential. While it’s relatively easy to make him work, mastering him will require lots of practice. With several sources of slows, stuns, and protective buffs for allies, Braum also brings the advantage of making his teammates happier – everyone likes having a Braum. And if you catch all five enemy champions with his Glacial Fissure – ho boy, it’s not going to end well for them.

How to Counter Tanks in LoL

While tanks are viewed as safe picks (which they are for the most part), they also suffer from the strongest, most unfair counterpicks. A tank facing its worst counter will be a liability like few other champions can be.

Here are some examples of tank counterpicks:

  • Cho’Gath: Sett easily wins his trades against Cho. Ulting Cho’Gath into his backline will nearly one-shot them thanks to his massive health pool.
  • Rammus: Trundle is Rammus’ worst nightmare. Trundle’s ultimate steals his opponents’ resistances, leaving Rammus with negative armor once his defensive stance wears off. When Subjugated by Trundle, Rammus goes from being impervious to physical damage, to dying in 3 basic attacks.
  • Malphite: Sylas versus Malphite is known for being the biggest counterpick – on 3 different lanes. Malphite doesn’t want to build magic resist, can’t trade against Sylas, and worst of all, Sylas makes excellent use of Malphite’s Unstoppable Force.

And if you’re looking for the best champions to counter tanks in general, here is your list to keep in mind at all times:

  • Top: All juggernauts!
  • Jungle: Trundle, Lillia, Yorick
  • Mid: Swain, Vel’Koz
  • Bot: Nilah, Kog’Maw, Vayne
  • Support: All enchanters!

Are the Other Tanks Viable?

Yes! They all are, and they all have their respective niche. And with all of the ‘best tanks in LoL’ lists, it’s important to remember that you will always perform better on champions you’re good at.

These champions are great to learn, but never be afraid to bring out your top lane Leona if that’s your pick of predilection.
