Tristana counters in LoL – the top three picks

Tristana is one of the most recognizable ADCs in the game. Even though she is not as popular right now, she can still have an impact on the right team compositions. When playing against her, it’s important to know what kind of champions work well against her to neutralize her snowball potential. To that end, you will learn which are the best Tristana counters in this season.

If you’re fairly new to the game, check out our guide on how counter picks work in League of Legends. You will understand why counter picks are important, and how you need to take advantage of them to increase your win rate. Make sure to also understand how classes counter one another in LoL so you always know what to pick in each game.

Kalista – the evergreen counter

Since Tristana has good damage output early on with her E, finding a champion who can match her damage is key. Kalista is one of them: thanks to her E, she can stack up the spears and win those 2v2 battles. It’s important to have a strong support for Kalista, though, so be aware of that as well.

Jinx – the meta counter

While Jinx doesn’t win against Tristana early on, she has plenty of wave clear to match Tristana’s push. Later in the game, Jinx will scale harder and dish out more damage, especially if she happens to get the passive going. Just farm up early on and wait for the right moment to strike.

Kog’Maw – the Jinx alternative

Similar to Jinx, Kog’Maw offers similar levels of late-game power. He’s a bit weaker early on, however, so don’t bother fighting with Tristana too often. The goal is to survive the first minutes of the game to start delivering more toward the mid game, and then take over the late game.

Worst Tristana counters

Varus – the worst matchup

Picking Varus into Tristana is never a good idea. Given the former’s lack of dashes and mobility, Tristana can easily chase after him with the jump. Not to mention that Tristana will always win the 2v2 trades. Avoid this pick if possible.

Miss Fortune – a bad choice

Miss Fortune has similar characteristics to Varus, making her a weak pick against Tristana. On top of that, the yordle can stop Miss Fortune’s ultimate with her own ultimate, greatly reducing her utility around the teamfights.

How do you counter Tristana with the items?

When going up against Tristana, it’s recommended to stack a mix of both armor and health. Below is a list of items to build you should consider, based on the class of champion you’re playing:

  • Bruisers: Death Dance, Sterak’s Gage, Randuin’s Omen
  • AD assassins: Guardian’s Angel
  • ADC champions: Guardian’s Angel
  • AP champions: Zhonya’s Hourglass
  • Tanks: Warden’s Mail, Randuin’s Omen

What Champion counters Tristana?

The three best counters are Kalista, Jinx, and Kog’Maw. Other strong counters are Yasuo, Nilah, and Zeri.

Does Tristana counter Lucian?

The Tristana-Lucian matchup is skill-based and it will depend on the two players’ ability to hit the auto attacks and abilities. Lucian can poke and harass while Tristana is farming minions but the latter has better all-in potential. Later in the game, though, Tristana should get stronger since she will have more damage compared to her counter part.
