Tryndamere counters in LoL – the three best choices

Tryndamere is a weird champion: even though he’s not played often, the pick is incredibly annoying to deal with. How many times did it happen to play against him and feel powerless? As a former top lane player, I always disliked the champion.

After playing hundreds of games throughout my LoL career, these are my best picks to counter Tryndamere. While some might not be the funniest champions to play, they will at least guarantee you a greater chance to win the game.

Gragas – bombing Tryndamere out of the lane

As a Gragas player, he’s one of my favorite picks when it comes to playing against Tryndamere. Both champions have sustain in their own kit, meaning that it will be fairly easy to get through the laning phase. The advantage Gragas has in this matchup, however, is the higher damage on short trades, and the ability to disengage whenever he pleases: Tryndamere can do little to stay on top of him.

Malphite – it’s rock solid

This is probably the worst matchup for Tryndamere: Malphite loves building armor, which will completely nullify Tryndamere’s damage output. Not to mention that Malphite lowers the champion’s attack speed, further reducing his DPS. The only way for Tryndamere to come out on top is by farming better, but a strong top laner will not allow him to get away like that.

Jax – the duel is intense

Jax’s E is the perfect counter to Tryndamere’s existence. Not only does it block his auto attacks, but the spell will also deal more damage in return. Unless the Jax player heavily messes up during the laning phase or gets camped, the chances of him losing are extremely low. If you want to play a more carry-oriented champion, this is the right one against Tryndamere.

Worst Tryndamere counters

Irelia – a tough matchup

Irelia is usually best against top lane champions who cannot match her mobility. Tryndamere is one of the few that can go head-to-head with his E, and he will always prevail in the 1v1 scenarios. His passive will make his auto attacks stronger and even if Irelia is on the brink of killing him, Tryndamere will have the ultimate to turn the play around.

Yorick – it’s time to pin her down

Yorick will always lose the trades ever since minute one. The issue with this matchup is that Tryndamere has similar levels of sustain and the ability to escape from Yorick’s W by dashing with the E. And both champions are low on health, Tryndamere will get the upper hand thanks to the ultimate.

How do you counter Tryndamere with the items?

When going up against Tryndamere, it’s recommended to stack armor and health to survive against his DPS. Below is a list of items to build based on the class of champions you’re playing:

Bruisers: Death Dance, Plated Steelcaps, Randuin’s Omen
AD assassins/ADCs: Guardian’s Angel
AP champions: Zhonya’s Hourglass
Tanks: Dead Man’s Plate, Randuin’s Omen/Frozen Heart

What Champion counters Tryndamere?

The three best champions are Gragas, Malphite, and Jax. There are others you can consider such as Yone, Sion, and Tahm Kench but they are more situational picks and not as effective.

Does Jax counter Tryndamere?

Yes, Jax can be considered a Tryndamere counter. Thanks to similar levels of DPS and the ability to block several of Tryndamere’s auto attacks, Jax prevails in this matchup.
