Veigar doesn’t really show up in the mid lane as much as he used to do in the past. In a dynamic environment like solo queue where weak early game champions can be punished heavily, he struggles to prove his value. Nonetheless, in the few chances you get to play against him, it’s important which are the picks to beat him. Here are the three best Veigar counters for this season.

Anivia is similar to Veigar in terms of the two should play in the laning phase. That said, Anivia has stronger wave clear which gives her a big advantage when it comes to lane priority, and she counters Veigar’s kit since she always counts on the passive to survive the enemy’s burst damage. If you know how to play her, it’s probably the best pick overall.
To beat Veigar you can also consider getting highly mobile champions that can quickly burst him down. Thanks to her dashes and abilities, Leblanc is the ideal candidate who checks all the points. In this lane, you’re looking to play aggressively and deny Veigar from farming stacks by killing him. Stay on top of him throughout the early game and make sure he doesn’t get away with a free lane.

Just like Anivia, Viktor excels at quickly pushing waves, which guarantees him control over the lane. Against Veigar, you’re mainly looking to farm up and use the lane priority to get control of neutral objectives. It’s tough to kill the enemy so pick up First Strike to create a substantial gold lead with the rune.
While Yasuo can win against Veigar early on, a great mid laner would respect that and know how to deal with a Yasuo. The issue for the blademaster in this matchup is that he’s quite susceptible to Veigar’s burst damage. You could argue he has the windwall but Veigar’s stun lasts too long which means he won’t be able to block it.
Melee champions typically struggle against Veigar and Sylas is no exception. Given Veigar’s E, Sylas can’t really walk in or he can easily find himself trapped. Veigar just needs to make sure he can survive the first minutes of the game and slowly stack up his Q. Later in the game, he will have enough damage to shot enemies with one combo.

While it’s not a hard counter, Zed has windows of opportunity to punish Veigar in the laning phase. His mobility and ability to switch with the shadows give him enough play-making potential to find lethal. That said, good mechanical proficiency and strong laning fundamentals are needed to succeed.
