Vi counters in LoL – the top three picks

Vi has been one of the most played picks in pro play throughout the last two years. Her engage and pick potential is rarely matched and having strong skirmishing potential made her a go-to pick for many players. While she doesn’t have the same amount of popularity in solo queue, she is still a solid pick to default on. With that in mind, we have listed the best Vi counters for the season so you will always know who to play to shut her down.

If you’re fairly new to the game, check out our guide on how counter picks work in League of Legends. You will understand why counter picks are important, and how you need to take advantage of them to increase your win rate. Make sure to also understand how classes counter one another in LoL so you always know what to pick in each game.

Taliyah – the ultimate counter

Taliyah is a tough champion to master, especially in the jungle. That said, she can be extremely rewarding, especially against a champion like Vi. Her E ability basically counters Vi’s entire kit, as she will be stunned and take more damage if she dashes in with Q or ultimate. We can agree that Vi will still be unstoppable during her ultimate but she won’t be able to do anything after that. Taliyah is the ultimate Vi counter as an anti-engage option.

Xin Zhao – skirmishing at its best

Xin Zhao is another champion who fares well against Vi. Thanks to his high skirmishing and potential and sustain, he can prevail over Vi in almost every single extended fight. Not to mention that Xin Zhao can also be used as a way to prevent the enemy from following up a combo after casting the ultimate. If your team needs a front line, then Xin Zhao is someone you should be heavily considering.

Jarvan IV – the Xin Zhao alternative

In case you are not proficient with Xin Zhao, we recommend playing Jarvan IV. He has comparable skirmishing potential but will offer better hard-engage ability thanks to his E-Q-R combos. Try to take advantage of your stronger early game to snowball the game while Vi still needs to pick up a few levels.

Worst Vi counters

Sejuani – healing up the damage

As a tank, Sejuani doesn’t have enough damage to match Vi. On top of that, the latter can shred through Sejuani’s armor thanks to her passive (and items), defeating the whole purpose of having a front line tank. Sejuani can’t even stop Vi’s engage, making it extremely difficult for her to win this matchup.

Lillia – too mobile for him

While Lillia is a highly mobile champion, she can’t escape the wrath of a Vi ultimate. The point-and-click ability will connect as long as she gets into range and once that happens, there is no way out for Lillia. Unless you lack magic damage in the team composition, it’s best not to pick her into Vi.

How do you counter Vi with the items?

When going up against Vi, it’s recommended to stack a mix of armor and HP. Below is a list of items to build you should consider, based on the class of champion you’re playing:

  • Bruisers: Death Dance, Sterak’s Gage
  • AD assassins: Guardian’s Angel
  • ADC champions: Guardian’s Angel
  • AP champions: Zhonya’s Hourglass
  • Tanks: Warden’s Mail, Frozen Heart, Plated Steelcaps

What Champion counters Vi?

The three best counters are Taliyah, Xin Zhao, and Jarvan IV. Other strong counters are Skarner, Fiddlesticks, and Kindred.

Does Lee Sin counter Vi?

Lee Sin isn’t usually considered a Vi counter. That said, Lee Sin is stronger early on and can snowball more easily. Vi has better pick potential while Lee Sin is better at pushing the advantage early on. It comes down to how the two impact the map and their lanes and create a substantial lead over the opponent.
