Yone counters in LoL – the top three picks

Yone was a fresh of breath air to the champion pool. AD mid lane champions were a bit missing and his arrival made the role more diverse as he was also a decent pick in professional play. His nature as a hybrid damage dealer allows him to blend in different team comps, and he has a powerful ultimate that can turn the fights around.

While he’s not that popular currently, he’s still tough to deal with in the right hands. In this guide, we will be going over his best counters, explaining the key reasons why Yone struggles against them.

If you’re fairly new to the game, check out our guide on how counter picks work in League of Legends. You will understand why counter picks are important, and how you need to take advantage of them to increase your win rate. Make sure to also understand how classes counter one another in LoL so you always know what to pick in each game.

Syndra – the evergreen counter

While Yone has several dashes and tools to ensure good mobility, his patterns can be easy to read. You can easily pinpoint the exact points where he will end up after using his Q3 or his E, making it easy for a champion like Syndra to deal lethal damage. Not to mention that Syndra can always knock him away if he tries to jump on her with Scatter the Weak, basically negating Yone’s attempts.

Sylas – the lane counter

If you are not comfortable with mid lane mages, Sylas is also a great choice into Yone. The main reason is that Sylas will always be able to heal up most of the damage taken by Yone with his W. On top of that, a strong Sylas player can react to Yone’s engage attempts with the ultimate by side-stepping with the E’s dash.

Twisted Fate – putting map pressure

Twisted Fate is notoriously known for his incredible early-game presence and roaming potential. Considering Yone is a melee champion and requires a few items to hit his power spikes, Twisted Fate gets a relatively easy laning phase and can shove waves to get lane priority and roam around the map. You need to have good macro with this matchup but overall he’s a great Yone counter.

Worst Yone counters

Corki – the worst matchup

If you play Corki, make sure the enemy is not in a position to pick Yone. Laning-wise, this is the best matchup possible since Corki cannot win early trades and he’s extremely susceptible to Yone’s trades over the course of the early game. This gets even worse once Yone unlocks his ultimate since he gets an extra dash to close the gap with Corki. You should be happy if you manage to come out even in this matchup.

Aurelion Sol – a bad choice

Similar to Corki, Asol has the weakness of having low damage early on. He won’t be able to contest Yone’s push, meaning that Yasuo’s brother is free to play around with minion waves and tempo. It gets better later on but surviving the first 20 minutes to get to that point will feel terrible.

How do you counter Yone with the items?

When going up against Yone, it’s recommended to stack a mix of both armor and magic resistance. Below is a list of items to build you should consider, based on the class of champion you’re playing:

  • Bruisers: Death Dance, Sterak’s Gage
  • AD assassins: Guardian’s Angel
  • ADC champions: Guardian’s Angel, Wit’s End
  • AP champions: Zhonya’s Hourglass
  • Tanks: Warden’s Mail, Randuin’s Omen

What Champion counters Yone?

The three best counters are Syndra, Sylas, and Twisted Fate. Other strong counters are Annie, Kassadin, and Cassiopeia.

Does Ahri counter Yone?

Ahri has a small advantage over Yone when it comes to the laning phase. Her trading patterns are less predictable compared to Yone but it mostly depends on whether Ahri can land the Charm when Yone walks up to farm or exchange blows. The other reason why Ahri has the edge is the fact that she can easily dodge Yone’s ultimate with Spirit Rush: as long as she doesn’t get caught, the chances of dying in this matchup are slim.
