Hall of Legends – celebrating the most influential players in League history

Initially teased during the match between Gen.G and BLG in the 2024 MSI Final, Riot Games has confirmed Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok as the first player to be in the Hall of Legends. After more than a decade of competition, Riot decided to bring the Hall of Legends to commemorate the most important and influential players who brought League esports to new heights.

For this occasion, there will be a special media event to celebrate Faker, as he will also receive a special reward, a customized Mercedes AMG SL 63.

“While esports is gaining more momentum, we at Mercedes Benz are delighted to extend our role as the official automotive partner of all global League of Legends Esports events to the Hall of Legends. I am more than happy to honor Faker as the first ever member,” said Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Marketing & Sales.

“We are convinced that the Hall of Legends marks the next step in our ongoing partnership with RiotGames after all previous successful community-focused events and the jointly created traditions, such as the Championship Ring.”

The Hall of Legends in-game event will include an event pass that will take players on a journey through Faker’s career. Players will be able to earn and purchase commemorative cosmetic items, collections, and skins themed after the Demon King himself in celebration of this moment. Additional details about the in-game event and content will be shared at a later date.

Details on the inductee criteria and voting process

As the GOAT of League of Legends, Faker was expected to be the first name of the Hall of Legends. That being said, he is still actively playing.

Esports.net reached out to Riot to gain information on what criteria are considered for a player to be considered a potential Hall of Legends candidate. The answer is as follows:

Any tier one pros with five cumulative years in tier one competition will be eligible for Hall of Legends. For Tier One competitions, Riot specifically refers to the following regions: LCS, LLA, CBLOL, LEC, LPL, LCK, PCS, VCS, LJL.

Riot also added that the Hall of Legends can both include active and retired players, as well as historic Tier 1 leagues as well: TCL, OPL, and the LCL (Russia). This choice was made to give also present-day pro players the opportunity to be honored and rewarded for their impact on the scene and esports in general.

Faker was inducted through the voting of an independent committee formed by talents, industry veterans, and media members. The criteria taken into consideration were: international and regional titles, contribution to the scene and competitive meta, and personal accolades.

Esports.net reached out for comments regarding the frequency or the limited number of inductees per year. Riot’s plan currently is to celebrate one inductee per year only.

Additionally, Riot mentioned a total of 50 panelists participated in the voting process and they plan to maintain that number each year. That being said, panelists are a one-year offering, meaning that the committee can change based on the invited members for a given year.
