FNC Oscarinin: “We were not fighting as usual”

After a heartbreaking loss that knocked out FNC from MSI, I sat down with Oscarinin to know what went wrong in the series.

FNC Oscarinin – a tough loss

This is Davide from Esports.net live from Chengdu after the match between FNC and Team Liquid and I’m joined by FNC’s top laner, Oscarinin. Hi Oscar – unfortunate that you were not able to get the victory today, obviously I know it doesn’t feel good but I still would like to ask you how you’re doing and what’s your impression of the series.

I mean I feel pretty bad I feel like we didn’t really expect to lose, I think we underperformed today really hard and I’m kinda speechless, I didn’t really expect to lose like this but we didn’t ever play like this, today we just didn’t play.

Could you elaborate on what you think went wrong?

I don’t know, I think we were nervous. We were not fighting as usual or didn’t track the enemies well and I feel like we weren’t playing as a team and we were doing individual stuff and not together.

Do you think the preparation was well done and it just didn’t transition into the stage?

Yeah, preparation was fine. We prepared as always but we just didn’t play on stage for sure.

I want to ask a bit about the draft since it looks like it played quite an important role in factoring the outcomes of the game. By watching the games, it looked like Aurelion Sol was giving you a tough time, did you think that was the issue or one of the main issues or you think there was something else?

I think it was not a problem but Poppy was the problem since we couldn’t engage and they outranged us and outscaled us very hard so it was really hard to play that game. We needed to ban it.

What about the fourth game? You were down and had a lot of pressure in the fourth game and we saw a big shift in the drafting with the B1 K’Sante and a lot of changes between bans and the draft. Can you go over a little about what happened in the third game and how it evolved in the draft of Game 4?

We just talked a lot about priorities on every lane, we think we were not drafting according to how we were playing today and on the fourth game we changed it a bit so we get a more comfortable draft and we just picked the K’Sante and I think we were doing good on it and that’s it.

Oscarinin on the gap between East and West

I just want to get “outside” of the game. G2 had a really strong series against T1 and you were able to put up a strong fight against Gen.G. Do you think the west has closed the gap compared to past years to the eastern teams and region in general at this MSI?

I still think Asian teams are better than the West in general but I think we are a bit closer than other years but we still need to keep closing it in Worlds or next year so we can actually win against them

What do you need are the key things to work on to close this gap?

I mean nothing differentiates us from asians. I just think it’s just mentality and work culture I would say. I think it’s only that, like we have to change how we think and take practice and how we think about solo queue and live for league of legends. I think a lot of people don’t care as much or don’t work as much. I think in Korea and China they take it way more seriously or something like that.

And if you had to briefly describe your experience at MSI, what would you say were the most meaningful things you were able to pick up? It can be both related to the game but also on a personal level.

I think I’m more confident in myself after playing MSI. I can play against Asian top laners and how I play most of the games and gives me confidence. Losing sucks and I will try to keep this feeling for LEC and if we qualify for Worlds which I expect us to, so we can actually play better.

Life in Chengdu and experience at MSI

It’s not related to the game but just a question if you’re willing to answer – I saw the team’s latest vlog where you went to see the pandas so I just wanted to know how Chengdu has been for you and then what you think about the food and how is it different from Europe where you have been most of your life.

I liked China, I always like to travel to Asian places because I think it’s the opposite of Europe and the West in general. It’s always fun to see different things – I like Chengdu and China in general and think it was really nice. The food, the weather, and the people too. We saw the panda, we saw a temple too. We had fun here, for sure.

Last question, I saw your tweet this morning with the Inazuma Eleven clip so I want to know who’s your favorite character in that anime and why?

I think Shawn Frost is the best in Inazuma Eleven. I used to play the Inazuma Eleven games and watched the anime on TV and I liked it a lot.

Any last message you would like to say to your fans in English or Spanish?

It sucks a lot to lose, no one expected us to lose, not us nor the fans probably. We played pretty badly, I’m sorry for today’s performance and I will try to play better in the LEC after this break we’re going to have I’m going to improve for the next season and Worlds too to make you proud because this is not good enough for us so I will change it.

Thank you, Oscar.
