G2 Hans Sama: “There’s a way for T1 to go all the way”

After a heartbreaking loss to T1 at MSI, G2 ADC player Hans Sama shared his feelings and thoughts in our post-match interview.

Hey everyone, this is Davide from esports.net and I’m joined by G2’s ADC, Hans Sama. First of all, hi Hans, it’s unfortunate you weren’t able to beat T1 today. Before we go into the series, though, I would like to ask what your thoughts are right now.

I feel like a bit down because today we could’ve played so much better and I think we had very high hopes to create something amazing but we didn’t really show up in our gameplay, our approach and even when the game was a win for us, we couldn’t close it out so we wasted a big opportunity and it feels bad because I felt like we actually had the tools to beat them today and everyone really believed in us so losing feels bad everyone.

It was quite clear that G2 actually showed its worth, especially in Game 3 for example with you getting advantage and also in Game 1 and Game 2, you were still playing pretty close for most of the match. Before we go into the game, I would like to ask you how was the preparation coming into this series, considering you had already played against T1. Was there something you worked on specifically for this match compared to the last one?

We looked to develop the way we see the meta. Well, some of the things we talked about didn’t really happen in the game. I think today it’s not like we prepared something super new for T1, we just looked at the way they play and look about the lane swaps, which they did a few times. The plan we had coming up in the beginning of the series wasn’t as good, I couldn’t have so much impact on my Draven starting from Game 1 so it feels bad to lose on my champion. That’s also why we went on Varus (in Game 3) even though Draven is usually counter to Kalista but it didn’t work.

Game 2’s backdoor

Aside from the bot lane matchup which was what worked against Top Esports, where you were able to get kills and generate leads across the map, I would like to ask you about Game 2 specifically because there was that moment where Faker managed to get the backdoor. Do you remember if you guys called the teleport knowing he was going to make the play?

We all knew, we instantly talked about Azir’s TP when the nexus was 1 HP. We said we probably can do Nash and some of us are gonna cover and CC him with Nautilus ult but I don’t actually remember our position but I think maybe we were just not ready on exactly where he would TP to fight him. Maybe I should’ve waited in the base a bit more and take my time but I don’t even remember if he TP’d on a ward…

He did on the minion…

I probably had to clear the wave. Maybe we were too in the heat of the moment that we just forgot the basics because you would just sweep around and get the minions so there’s no way he can actually TP unless he has to E-Q through top or bot. I think it was just us trying to rush too fast I guess.

Despite now being out of MSI, G2 was still able to make it to the top four and showed potential to beat Eastern teams like Top Esports. What do you think you need to improve a little bit more to get even closer?

I think we’ve been doing pretty good this year to improve the way we play the game and I think today this tournament has been a huge experience for us because we came being full tryhard. We looked to learn from our past experiences, last Worlds and MSI and I feel like we’ve done pretty well. We started bootcamp two weeks before MSI, we were prepping well, figuring out the meta and playing stronger and stronger against Asian teams so it’s taking the right conclusions and learning through that experience to become stronger next time and keep up with the way we grind the game.

G2 Hans Sama shares who he think wins MSI

Before we round off the interview, I would like to ask you something about the remaining teams. Who do you think will win MSI and why? Go through a bit all the teams that are left.

I think Gen.G are the clear favorites to win MSI. I feel like they gotta be careful of T1 coming back in shape. For sure they were a bit shaky throughout the week after they played against us and TL. I feel Gen.G are favorites unless T1 comes back stronger and manage to beat BLG. Who knows if they can make a come back. It’s impressive how they were under a lot of pressure and still managed to win those series. There’s a way for T1 to go all the way.

Is there anything you want to say to your fans to round off the interview?

I thank you for all the support shown us, I know that everyone was supporting us, dreaming that we would go all the way and we also believed it, you know, to win MSI, beat BLG and T1. But in the end, we didn’t make it and I feel sorry to the fans that really believed in us and yeah, thank you for the support.

Thank you for your time Hans and hope you can get some well-deserved rest before the start of the LEC Summer.
