G2 Yike: “Getting revenge on T1 would be the best”
After their incredibly dominant win against TES at MSI, I talked to G2’s jungler Yike in the post-match interview.
G2 Yike after taking down Top Esports at MSI
Hey everyone, this is Davide from esports.net and I’m joined by G2’s jungler, Yike. Hi Yike, first of all, congrats on your victory against Top Esports. I’m glad this time I got to talk to you after a victory. Before we go into the rest of the interview, I want to ask you – how are you feeling?
Thank you, I’m feeling amazing. I can’t believe we actually 3-0’d them and I think we played very, very good and I’m very very happy.
The series was quite one-sided and probably not many were expecting this result, you said yourself. It was clear that Top Esports made good preparation by banning out picks like Poppy and Zac but you ended up pulling out Ivern. Was this a trump card all along or was it prepared just for this series?
I mean, I would say Ivern was a bit of a trap for them because we kinda knew what champs they wanted to pick and we knew Ivern would be good into those champs especially game 1 so we drafted Ivern very well and it was just a free game
Speaking of drafts and picks, it always looked like you were prepared for anything. We saw it with the Kog’Maw and Braum in the second game, we saw it with all the other picks. Was there any moment during this series where you and the rest of the team felt surprised by one of their picks or bans?
I wouldn’t even say so. Maybe Udyr in Game 3 but I don’t think it was good. I think it was better for us that they picked Udyr cause I was mostly scared they would pick Twisted Fate or something but they went Udyr and we were happy. Maybe they went Rek’Sai after I played Rek’Sai, maybe they wanted to play the same champ but I don’t think there was anything special.
You said you wanted to get revenge on Tian. Tian obviously said he wanted to beat you. What do you think of his performance today?
I think he was playing good. I think my laners were playing better than their laners today so I don’t think he could’ve done much to help his team I think he was playing good anyways so I still have a lot of respect for him.
Let’s talk a little about MSI in general and the year you’ve gone through. A year has gone by ever since I talked to you at MSI. I would like to know – what changed in you and what have you been most proud of during this year?
I would say what I changed mostly is the way I take practice like my solo queue practice. I put more time playing more solo queue games, practicing the right champs and my mentality to not tilt because I’m a jungler, it’s easy to tilt, so I really focused on that and I got a lot of help from my staff, from Isma (Ismael), my performance coach, he helped me so much and not get too emotional

Looking ahead
Now that you’ve beaten Top Esports, you will face the winner of T1 and TL. I would like to ask you what you think of TL going into this match and a prediction on the series tomorrow.
I respect Team Liquid for beating Fnatic – I didn’t expect as well and I think we have to prepare for both teams because T1 is looking a bit shaky right now. They’re still very very good so we don’t know what will happen but I probably think T1 is going to win but we will have to prepare for both. Team Liquid will be fun to play but getting revenge on T1 would be the best.
Prediction score?
Probably 3-0 for T1.
With this performance today it’s quite clear that G2 has what it takes to take the trophy. You’ve already said before that you believe you can win the title What do you think of the other eastern teams, considering that you have beaten and dominated Top Esports today?
We beat Top Esports and we were close to a 3-1. We didn’t really play BLG or Gen.G yet and they are probably the two strongest teams so we still need to stay humble with that. I think we are very confident and for sure we can beat these teams but we have to get ready and keep preparing for all the teams.
Life in Chengdu and fan questions
Let’s talk a little bit about Chengdu and China. So correct me if I’m wrong, but this should be your first time in China. How has Chengdu been so far? Name one thing you absolutely love about the city or the country.
It’s my first time here in China, I’ve never been here before. I didn’t really know how it was gonna be but it was very nice when I got here. It was much greener than I thought. I really liked the pandas, that’s one of my favorite things seeing the pandas and just the atmosphere you know. Also the food is very very nice so all of that is like amazing.
Can you handle spicy?
No, I think I’m pretty bad with spicy. I really like spicy but I’m really bad with it so it’s kind of a bad combination.
You gotta be careful in Chengdu here then. On a side note, I wanted to ask you – G2 shared your MSI playlist a while ago with all the other guys; you probably have seen it on social media. Have there been any new songs you added to your playlist this tournament?
Not really. I have just been doing my thing – I guess I watched Eurovision – that was kinda fun and there were some nice there but nothing special.
Fan question time. What’s the one thing you can’t live without?
Huh, that’s a good question. Probably like my PC you know. I need to be able to play some games yeah, I love playing games, even other games as well but League yeah.
Favorite Swedish food or favorite food in general?
I really like in Sweden, it’s called Korv Stroganoff, it’s like sausage with Maccaroni and sometimes with ketchup and it’s like it really brings back memories for me. It’s very nice.
What’s something you’ve always wanted to learn and why?
When I was a kid, I really liked people that were dancing and I wanted to be good at dancing but I was always pretty bad and I was also a bit embarrassed to learn it because not many of my friends were doing it and I was also playing games so yeah, dancing would be really sick to do.
Chengdu is quite known for its pop culture and I’ve actually seen people dance near the arena so it might be a good time to maybe try it. Last thing before we round off, is there anything you want to say to your fans out there and future opponents?
I just want to say thank you for the support even though we lost to T1, I think all of us got very nice messages from everyone and I’m very happy with how we’re playing right now so keep cheering for us.
