Gen.G Knocked Out of Worlds 2025 as Chovy Falls Short Against KT Rolster

Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon is thought of by many to be the best mid-laner in the world. He has one of the most dominant domestic records in history and won MSI and Esports World Cup back to back, but he and Gen.G still fell short at Worlds with a loss to KT Rolster in the semi-finals.

And, while it definitely helps that KT played better than the team had ever before, making the first Worlds Grand Final in the org’s history, it was also a massive underperformance from Gen.G.

KT is essentially a squad of misfits. Their roster barely came together by the end of the year, with support Jeong “Peter” Yoon-su and ADC Seo “deokdam” Dae-gil both getting benched at some point in the year as the team struggled to put anything together.

But, when it mattered most, Gen.G were the ones who couldn’t get it together despite having 2 world champions on the team. Chovy especially had a tough series, with him being mostly invisible against Gwak “Bdd” Bo-seong.

Gen.G Choke Again at 5th Consecutive Worlds

Gen.G has qualified for the Worlds quarterfinals every year since 2020. They’re remarkably consistent, always being the best or second-best team in Korea going into the year’s biggest international.

However, they’re also remarkably consistent when it comes to tripping over themselves when a spot in the World Finals is on the line. This team, no matter who they put on the roster, just can’t make it.

This loss is especially cruel because Chovy got bested by Bdd, the mid laner who was on Gen.G for years before Chovy got picked up in 2022 and was afflicted with the very same international curse.

It was just highlight play after highlight play from Bdd for the entire series, with him putting the team on his back at any opportunity he could find. KT played to facilitate his success, and it worked exceptionally well in every match. Bdd proved he was the best mid laner on the server that day.

This marks the end of a year in which Gen.G secured the absolute best roster they could, one that saw them win multiple internationals, only to fall short at the international that really mattered.

Meanwhile, KT making it to finals to up against T1 means that there is be a telecom war at the Worlds 2025 Grand Finals. These two orgs have been rivals for several years, with T1 almost always winning against KT. The finals could be KT’s chance at redemption against the defending Worlds champions.
