Gen.G vs BLG – The two Eastern first seeds clashing
After more or less a year, Gen.G and BLG will be fighting off again on the MSI stage. Last time out, BLG ended up coming out victorious, sending Gen.G home in dominant fashion. This year, however, things might be closer than what you might think.
On one hand, BLG made the upgrade by bringing in the strongest Chinese mid lane Knight. On the other, Gen.G made considerable upgrades to its top and jungle by picking up Kiin and Canyon.
These two teams came as the favorites to win the tournament and so far, both teams are meeting the expectations. Having said that, these two first seeds have had their moments here and there, which do not help when it comes to analyzing this match.
BLG – one of the most aggressive teams
BLG were supposed to have an easy time against PSG Talon but the PCS team ended up bringing the series to Silver Scrapes, pushing BLG on the brink of losing. While it was closer than we thought, I feel like BLG’s true strength came out in the deciding Game 5, when BLG just dominated from start to finish.
One of the most aggressive and early-game focused teams, BLG showed similar traits in their match against T1. Having taken advantage of fast rotations with Taliyah, BLG was able to make consistent small plays to find leads and open up a gap.
I’m expecting BLG to try a similar thing against Gen.G, who happens to have quite a different playstyle.
Gen.G – it’s all about macro the late-game teamfighting
Speaking of Gen.G, the Korean team looked shaky against Top Esports in their second series against Top Esports, as they were forced to a 5-game series. Their first win against Fnatic was expected but considering how G2 was able to smash Top Esports the other day, it does raise some questions about Gen.G’s potential.
Nonetheless, I feel like Gen.G’s playstyle is one of the best at countering BLG’s aggressive playstyle. They are known to slow down the pace of the game and make team-oriented plays to allow their carries to scale up. If BLG doesn’t find huge leads early on, Gen.G will be in a position to take the fight to BLG.
The key of the match will be almost entirely built on this, and a lot of the focus should be on the mid lane matchup. Both Chovy and Knight will play an important goal on their team, starting off from their champion pick to their performance. Overall, I’m expecting BLG to have a slight advantage due to how they performed against T1 but this shouldn’t be a short series.
