The LoL Esports Global Power Rankings is an “elo-like model” that consolidates and considers teams’ data, match history, and achievements to classify all teams within Tier 1 leagues.

The “dynamic, data-driven rankings engine” will balance a weighted average between a team’s Elo and their regional league’s Elo, with an 80-to-20 ratio, officially coined as the “power score formula”.

With this approach, Riot Games is looking to help fans gain easier comprehension of teams’ power and help break down the games’ complex mechanics for casual viewers. It was featured throughout Worlds 2024 on lolesports.com and during broadcasts, with even the play-ins stage impacting the overall teams’ standings.

“This system evaluates not only individual team performances, but also the strength of the regions they hail from,” stated Riot. “The result is a comprehensive and transparent snapshot of the global competitive landscape, updated after every day of play during Worlds 2024.”

How the Rankings work

The LoL Esports Global Power Rankings are updated after every game occurs either in a regional split or international event.

The latter will have a higher weight than regional events, with Knockout matches also carrying more importance than group-stage ones.

The evaluation window will span over three years for league Elo and a two-year window for team Elo, allowing the system to balance potential roster changes while considering enough amount of international games.

Riot Games published the final rankings after the Worlds Grand Final took place in November at the 02 Arena in London, United Kingdom.

With potential improvements coming in for 2025 such as integrating in-game statistics to modify power scores according to match performance, introducing player-centric power rankings to better represent individual skills, and enhancing the system’s accuracy, fans will have an additional tool to quickly get up-to-date on all the League of Legends action from across the world.
