What is the LoL Esports World Cup 2024?
The Esports World Cup is an esports event taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It can be considered the successor of the Gamers8 festival which took place last year. Featuring over 20 esports games, it’s the biggest esports event to date in terms of length and games included (a total of 21).
Among the various games, League of Legends (LoL) was also included in the Esports World Cup, with a small tournament spanning 4 days during week 1. From July 4 to July 7, the eight best teams from the four major LoL regions will square off to determine the EWC champion.
The format and participants
The League of Legends tournament at the Esports World Cup 2024 is a single elimination bracket featuring the top two seeds from each of the four major regions (LCK, LPL, LEC, and LCS). The invited teams are the same as the ones who took part in the Mid-Season Invitational in Chengdu, China. Therefore, the eight teams participating in the tournament are:
- Gen.G
- T1
- Bilibili Gaming
- Top Esports
- G2 Esports
- Fnatic
- Team Liquid
- FlyQuest
Quarterfinals and semifinals will use a Bo3 format while the Finals will be a Bo5. While the competition itself is not connected to other global LoL events, the EWC features a massive $1 million prize pool, with the winners taking home $400,000 and 1,000 points for the club championship, which will give additional prize money to the best 16 teams across all titles.
