LPL Summer 2024 – 4 teams to Worlds

Despite having the advantage of playing on home soil, the LPL wasn’t able to repeat last year’s success at MSI, as BLG dropped to Gen.G in the final match for the title.

Nonetheless, the team’s strong performance allowed the LPL to retain the fourth slot at Worlds, adding one representative for the second international tournament later this year.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the format and schedule for the LPL summer split.

The format

It was recently confirmed the LPL will undergo major format changes for the first time in years. Not only will there be a different structure but most importantly, the LPL will be the first region to implement the “Fearless Draft” rules across the major regions.

While there used to be a single round robin, the new format will see 17 teams divided into 4 seeding pools based on their performance in the spring season. The 4 home venue teams (JDG, NIP, LNG, WE) are placed in different groups. The remaining teams are then distributed by pool to ensure balanced grouping.

There will be a double round robin within the group (Bo3 matches). At the end of the round robin, the two bottom teams from each group will go to Group B while the remaining will be in Group A.

At that point, Group A and Group B will have a single round robin of Bo3 matches within each group. The Top 7 teams in Group A will qualify for Playoffs while the bottom two of Group A will compete with the top 4 teams from group B for the last three spots in playoffs. The bottom 4 teams from Group B, instead, will be eliminated.
