Jake is the main character face of Subway Surfers. The little graffiti artist is the one of the surfers you’ll be starting off your playthroughs with until you unlock new members of the crew.
Tricky is one of Jake’s best friends. To add her to the team you’ll need to collect three of her Tricky’s Hats. Unlocking her adds a fun twist to your runs.
Fresh is another friend of Jake. To add this music lover to your squad you’ll need to collect 50 of Fresh’s Stereo.
Yutani is the quirky, sci-fi-loving character. She’s a bit mysterious, always wearing her UFO costume. Collecting her UFO tokens will unlock her character.
The game also features limited-time characters during special events. Some of these special surfers are reskins of existing characters in Subway Surfers. Other times they’ll be unique surfers that you need to get limited time event currency to get them.
At the time of writing, there are 195 characters in Subway Surfers (due to Pixel Jake, Ballerina Tricky etc being counted as characters instead of outfits).
Many of your runners can only be added after completing season challenges that expire after a certain time. Sometimes they’ll be a reward for certain stages in a season event, other times you’ll need to gain event coins to purchase them.
There are 2 types of characters in Subway Surfers. Limited Characters, as the name implies, can only be gotten during limited time periods before going off-sale for a while, or permanently.
Whereas non-limited characters tend to be constantly available. Examples of this are Jake and Tricky, who are available to everyone and quite easy to obtain. Some characters also have alternate outfits, which changes up how they look.
Unlike limited event characters, these are usually much easier to obtain if you want to have a different look to your favorite runner.
If you’re free to play, there’s plenty of surfers to unlock. The opening 4 runners, Tricky, Fresh, Spike, and Yutani, are all unlocked with collecting their unique items in multiples of 3, 5, 200 and 500 respectively. After that, new characters can be bought with coins. The very same coins that you collect with regular gameplay.

At the time of writing there are 66 characters that can be bought with the in-game coins, however some are also only available during event periods. Some characters can be unlocked for making real money purchases, or even just linking your Facebook account!
