What Is Overwatch 3? Leaked Details, Mobile Gameplay, & Release Date

Overwatch 3 has not yet been officially announced by Blizzard, yet some reports, leaks, and rumors have surfaced stating that a mobile spin-off dubbed internally “Overwatch 3” is being developed. From what it sounds like, it’s not the usual hero-shooter we all know—it’s apparently being built as a MOBA specifically for mobile.

All We Know about Overwatch 3 so far

Internal Development and Genre Shift

The project, internally referred to as “Overwatch 3,” is not simply a port of Overwatch 2 for mobile. It reportedly began as a set of early mobile concepts intended to launch alongside Overwatch 2, but those plans shifted as Blizzard prioritized the live-service direction of the main game. Since then, the mobile title has evolved into a standalone project with a different gameplay style.

Being developed as a MOBA now suggests gameplay mechanics more in line with titles like MLBB or Honor of Kings, featuring lanes, objectives, and a top-down perspective rather than first-person shooting.

Current Status and Community Response

Blizzard has apparently teamed up with Nexon for Korean and Japanese publishing responsibilities. Other big-time publishers like NCSoft, Netmarble, and Krafton were also vying for the rights, but Nexon eventually won the deal. The game is set to see a region-specific launch, with East Asia first. No word yet on worldwide availability.

Despite the rumors all around, Blizzard has not made any official statements about it. No trailers, screenshots, or gameplay reveal have ever been posted. The project appears to still be behind closed doors, with fans taking educated guesses on the title’s chances and direction. Using the name “Overwatch 3” could be more a development codename than a final branding choice.

Overwatch 3 Release Date On Mobile Speculations

There is no official release date set. But some insiders predict that the game could be announced at a later BlizzCon, perhaps in late 2025 or 2026. The move to mobile and to the MOBA format suggests Blizzard’s efforts to broaden the Overwatch franchise and reach new markets outside of its usual FPS fan base.

What fans can Expect

Blizzard’s only proper shot at a MOBA so far was Heroes of the Storm. Yes, it had that classic Blizzard polish and was super easy to get into, but it just never really took off like League of Legends or Dota 2. So now, jumping into the mobile MOBA space, which is already packed with giants like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Honor of Kings (and even Wild Rift struggling despite being from Riot), isn’t exactly going to be smooth.

Blizzard also doesn’t have a ton of experience in either MOBAs or mobile games, so it’s not like this is familiar territory for them. And let’s not forget, even solid hero shooters like XD’s T3 Arena—which honestly felt like a really well-made Overwatch clone—couldn’t break into the mobile scene in a big way.

That said, shifting gears toward a MOBA might actually work out better in the long run, since interest in that genre’s still going strong. Whether that’ll be enough, especially with the kind of expectations the Overwatch brand brings, is something we’ll just have to wait and see.
