Record-Breaking Mobile Esports Final Outshines Premier League Attendance Figures
When you think of esports, you typically think of games like League of Legends and Counter-Strike, but over in Asia, mobile esports are absolutely massive – so much so that one league’s Honor of Kings finals just brought in enough fans to pack an NFL or Premier League stadium and then some.
Honor of Kings is the world’s most-played mobile MOBA with over 100 million daily active players, predominantly in China.
It also hosted the King Pro League (KPL) Championship Grand Finals on November 8 in Beijing, China, at the Beijing National Stadium, which has a total capacity of 80,000 when used for huge sporting events like the Olympics.
The KPL is the Chinese Honor of Kings league, with a total prize pool of over $2 million USD. It also happens to be one of the biggest esports leagues in the world, and you’ve probably never even heard of it before today.

The grand finals was played between the star-studded All Gamers and Chongqing Wolves, who made a strong loser’s bracket run to get to the grand final in the first place.
All Gamers – or AG Super Play – were the eventual winners, pocketing the lion’s share of the prize pool with their 4-2 victory.
This wasn’t the story that stole headlines over the weekend, though, as the tournament set a new world record for the largest live attendance for an esports tournament, according to Guinness World Records
The final number of confirmed attendees was 62,196. The only Premier League teams that average higher than that are Manchester United and West Ham United.

Tickets for the event sold out in 12 seconds, with over 60,000 tickets sold in the blink of an eye. No doubt, had it not been for the space needed to create the spectacle they did, the extra 20,000 tickets to fill capacity could have been sold pretty easily.
Prior to that, approximately 45,000 spectators watched the final of the PES 2016 UEFA EURO 2016 virtual tournament in Champ de Mars, Paris, France, on 7 July 2016. Before that, 40,000 fans packed out the Seoul World Cup Stadium in South Korea to watch the climax of the 2014 League of Legends World Championship in October 2014, according to Guinness World Records.
