LCK Week 2 Match Analysis and Predictions

With the LCK Week 2 Saturday and Sunday matches coming, we get a good look into the teams who have and have not been living up to expectations. While the teams have mostly only played three to four games, the standings are already generally looking to reflect the last Spring season. However, DRX and Hanwha Life Esports are exceptions, starting this season by dropping easier matchups against lower tier teams.

Hanwha Life Esports

DRX vs. DWG KIA

Simply put, DRX are down real bad and are at the bottom of the leader board, having yet to score a win, 0-3. DRX, formerly Dragon X, had been a dominant force in the LCK, placing 2nd in the 2020 LCK Spring regular season and playoffs. DRX’s losses are particularly concerning given their two losses against Afreeca Freecs and Nongshim Red Force, teams that had placed beneath them in the 2021 Spring Season. DWG KIA on the other hand have come into the summer season as the team to beat. They had taken the top spot in the 2021 Spring regular season and playoffs, along with a recent second place finish in the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational.
Prediction: DRX 26% l DWG KIA 74

Afreeca Freecs vs. KT Rolster

Afreeca Freecs had a slow start to 2021, finishing 9th – 10th place in the Spring Season, missing their chance to qualify for playoffs. However, while they opted to not make any major roster changes aside from the addition of secondary Bot Laner ‘Leo’, Afreeca Freecs are going into the weekend with a strong 2-1 record. KT placed not far from Afreeca in the Spring Season, also failing to qualify for playoffs. While the team are currently down 1-2, KT Rolster had significantly more challenging opponents. KT managed to go undefeated against DWG KIA in the week 1 Bo3, a sign KT Rolster has what it takes to topple even the best teams.
Prediction: Afreeca Freecs 45% l KT Rolster 55%Sunday

Liiv Sandbox vs. T1

Liiv Sandbox finish amongst the bottom teams last season. This prompted the team to take action, signing two new players to their starting roster. These players include Kingkong and Howling, both from LSB’s academy team (LSG Challengers). Unfortunately for LSB, there had been no miracle turnaround in week 1, with the team currently down 0-2. T1 on the other hand have always been one of the top LCK teams. While T1 have stumbled in the past, they have always retained a firm dominance against lower tier teams such as LSB. The team may no longer be Korea’s best, and have already recorded a loss against rivals DWG KIA, but have managed to secure two wins against Fredit BRION and Hanwha Life Esports.
Prediction: Liiv Sandbox 21% l T1 79%

Fredit BRION vs. Hanwha Life Esports

The two teams were miles apart in the Spring Season, with Fredit placing 9th – 10th, while Hanwha had been a top 3 team. However, both teams enter into this weekend’s match head to head. Hanwha Life Esports faced an exceptionally slow start, down 0-2 in week 1. However, considering the stronger HLE lineup, they should hold a firm advantage over Fredit BRION.

Prediction: Fredit BRION 33% l Hanwha Life Esports 67%
