All cat Pokémon throughout the franchise

Cat Pokémon are extremely popular. Cats are a very prominent pet in the real world and designs of Pokémon are often based on real world things. As a result, there have been more than a few cats stretched across the nine generations and regions. Pokémon such as Sprigatito, Purrloin, Delcatty and so many more have feline qualities that make them fan favorites. Here’s the full list of all cat Pokémon through Scarlet and Violet.

List of cat Pokémon Generations I through IX

Kanto region/ Generation I

Cat Pokémon

Meowth is the first cat Pokémon

In Kanto, the first Pokémon ever were discovered. That means the first of each type and the first of each design influence. The first dragon Pokémon, the first dog Pokémon and of course, the first cat Pokémon. That honor goes to Meowth, who has become an iconic figure in the franchise. Its evolution, Persian, is another cat-like Pokémon introduced in the first generation. Growlithe, while known as the Puppy Pokémon, is pretty clearly also influenced by a tiger- a.k.a. a big cat. That means that both Growlithe and Arcanine are technically both dogs and cats, which is only possible in Pokémon. Eevee and its evolutions are also very feline in nature. That means in Generation I, Eevee, Flareon, Vaporeon and Jolteon fall under this category. The Mythical Pokémon Mew is also very cat-like in its design.

Johto region/ Generation II

Since Eevee is somewhat cat-like, its evolutions are, too. In Generation II, Umbreon and Espeon joined the game alongside the three evolutions from Kanto. They are feline in nature, too. Ultimately, there aren’t that many cats that made their debut this generation.

Hoenn region/ Generation III

Delcatty hails from the Hoenn region

Hailing from the Hoenn region, Skitty and Delcatty, as their names so aptly suggest, are cats, too. They are clear representations of felines as they don’t even boast any overtly Pokémon-esque features. They’re pretty much just cartoon kitties. Once again, there aren’t too many cats that originated in the Hoenn region.

Sinnoh region/ Generation IV

Glameow and Purugly are two of the most notable cat Pokémon to come from the Sinnoh region. Glameow is pretty much a cartoon cat with a swirly tail. Purugly gets the Pokémon treatment but is still undoubtedly a feline creature. Leafeon and Glaceon, two more Eevee evolutions, are also very cat-like. They were added to Eevee’s evolutionary line in Generation IV, so they find their way onto this list.

Unova region/ Generation V

Cat Pokémon

Purrloin is a very clear cat in the Pokémon world

Purrloin and Liepard are the first two Pokémon cats found in the Unova region of Generation V. It is bipedal and Liepard is quadripedal. While Purrloin looks like a typical domesticated cat, Liepard is more of a leopard as the name suggests. Also from Hoenn, Zorua and Zoroark share qualities with felines. They also share qualities with canines and foxes, so they’re a truly interesting pair of Pokémon. Mienfoo and Mienshao are a couple of fighting cats, but cats they are. They round out the Pokémon that look like cats from Unova.

Kalos region/ Generation VI

Fennekin shares qualities with a dog, cat and fox. When it evolves to Braixen and then Delphox, it stops looking like a dog or a cat, but the original form is both canine and feline in nature, ironically. Litleo and Pyroar, both the male and female forms, are like lions, which is the most famous big cats. They don’t look domesticated, but they certainly resemble the king of the jungle. Espurr and its evolution Meowstic are clearly based on cats as well. Both male and female Meowstics resemble cats. Sylveon, the final Eevee evolution, is found in Kalos, so it is the final cat Pokémon from this region. Kalos was good to those who like Pokémon that look like cats.

Alola region/ Generation VII

Alolan Meowth is a different version of an existing cat in the Pokémon world

In Alola, some Pokémon look different. As such, the Alolan Meowth and Alolan Persian are two more cat-like Pokémon to be introduced to the franchise. Joining them in this generation are Litten and its evolutionary line. Litten, Torrakat and Incineroar are all different sizes of cats. Litten is like, well, a kitten and its subsequent evolutions make it bigger until it resembles a big cat with Incineroar. Solgaleo, one half of the Legendary duo, is clearly a lion with an impressive mane. Zeraora also shares a lot of characteristics with cats and wraps up the number from Alola.

Galar region/ Generation VIII

Once again, the Galar region was where some existing Pokémon look different. Meowth, once again, has a regional form here. This time, it does not evolve into a Galarian Persian again. Instead, it evolves to Perrserker, another Pokémon that looks like a cat. Unfortunately, those are the only new cat-like Pokémon from Galar. The region is home to other cats, but none that originally spawned there as their first appearance.

Paldea region/ Generation IX

Cat Pokémon

Sprigatito is Generation IX’s Grass-type Starter Pokémon and a cat

Sprigatito is a cat starter. The Grass-type evolves into Floragato and Meowscarada, two more cats. It does become bipedal, but the two evolutions are clearly feline. Chien-Pao one of the psuedo-Legendaries from this game, is very much a cat. It is similar to Mienshao except that it is quadripedal like a normal cat. Ultimately, that concludes the Pokémon that look like cats from the current generations.

DLC will introduce more Pokémon to Scarlet and Violet as we go, but for now, this is the comprehensive list of cats in the Pokémon franchise. Cats are very popular animals, which is why there are so many in the franchise. Pokémon are very often inspired by real-life things. For example, Revavroom is a vacuum cleaner, Toucannon is a toucan, Dragonite is a dragon, Squirtle is a turtle and so on and so forth.

Since there are so many different kinds of cats in the world, which includes domesticated and wild, it would be a surprise to not see a lot of cat Pokémon continue to get added in subsequent generations. Generation IX made it clear that this franchise isn’t ending any time soon, so there’s no reason a lot more Pokémon that look like cats shouldn’t get added in Generation X, XI, XII and however many more that come in the future.
