How many Pokémon types are there?
How many Pokémon types are there? Over the years, a few have been added to those that were initially present in Generation I. However, it’s been quite some time since the last one was added, which likely means that there are no new Pokémon types on the way.
As of now, there are 19 types in the franchise. Here’s what they all are and a few notable examples of each.

How many Pokemon Types are there?
Currently, there are 19 different Pokemon types. For now, it certainly looks like it’s going to stay that way. Most of the types have been in game since way back in Generation 1.
Since then, Dragon and Steel types were added in Generation 2 and Fairy followed in Generation 6. But since then, there have been many new Pokemon added but no more types. The good news is all the types are available in most games in the franchise including Pokemon Go.
Pokemon is not a new franchise, it’s been around for over 20 years. With over 1,000 Pokemon in the National Pokedex, adding new types would really affect the game interactions and balancing. That doesn’t necessarily mean a new type is off the cards but the game is much more focused on dual type Pokemon and new forms that change existing types such as the Alolan region offering an Ice type Vulpix instead of Fire.

The ??? type, which existed in the games from Generation 2 – 4 is the most interesting. Sadly, it was removed after that and hasn’t returned. This is probably because it’s effectively an unusable type. Only Arceus has a form for it, so it’s unclear what the plan was for it.
