They will show up at Pokéstops and in balloons carrying out nefarious deeds for their ultimate boss: Giovanni. Giovanni is the ultimate threat, so it makes sense that his underlings would be a pretty substantial challenge, too. Learn how to beat Giovanni with ease. Leaders Arlo, Sierra and Cliff are a major step up from the grunts. If you come across Arlo, it’s good to know how to beat him.

Leader Arlo is one of three bosses in Pokémon GO
One thing to note is that all leaders change their Pokémon eventually. Arlo’s Pokémon are what they are right now, but that hasn’t always been the case and it won’t always be in the future. Nevertheless, his current team consists of:
- Teddiursa
- Golurk/ Hypno/ Blaziken
- Banette/ Scizor/ Luxray
The first Pokémon Arlo has right now is Teddiursa and that is universal. When you fight Arlo Pokémon GO, he will throw out a Shadow Teddiursa to begin with. It is a Normal-type, which means you need to have a Fighting-type to counter it. Try out these to effectively take it down:
- Primeape
- Hariyama
- Zamazenta
- Lucario
- Heracross
- Cobalion
- Buzzwole
Normal is not super effective against any type, so the secondary typing of a Fighting-type in this instance is not that important.
Leader Arlo’s second Pokémon
Arlo’s second Pokémon will vary. It could either be a Golurk, Hypno or Blaziken. If it’s a Golurk, then you will need a Dark, Ghost, Water, Ice or Grass-type to counter it. For example, Gengar, Umbreon, Beartic, Vaporeon, Blastoise, Leafeon, Banette or Lapras will work wonders.
If he throws out a Hypno next, then you will need either a Bug, Dark or Ghost type. Try using Vivillon, Darkrai, Absol, Spiritomb, Sableye, Shedinja or Liepard. This should effectively take down the Hypno.
His third option for the second attacker is Blaziken. For this, you will need a Psychic, Flying, Ground or Water type. Try Lugia, Hippowdon, Vaporeon, Blastoise, Kyogre, Groudon, Mewtwo, Mew or Gothitelle and the Blaziken will faint quickly.
Leader Arlo’s third and final Pokémon
Leader Arlo will throw out a third and final battler at this point. If he decides to attack you with a Banette, you will need to use a Dark type. It is also weak to Ghost, but that means your Pokémon would be weak to each other and there would be no advantage. Given that his third Pokémon is the strongest, it’s best to ensure an advantage here. To do this, use Dark-type Pokémon such as Zoroark, Mightyena, Alolan Persian, Obstagoon, Bisharp or Tyranitar.
If Scizor is the final Pokémon, it is weak to Fire. Since it’s Bug/Steel, Fire will be extremely useful here. Ninetales, Growlithe, Rapidash, Entei, Darmanitan, Heatmor, Charizard, Moltres, Ho-Oh and Blaziken will work wonders.
The final option is for it to be Luxray, which is an Electric-type. This makes it weak to Ground and Ground alone. You will need Pokémon such as Dugtrio, Sandslash, Rhyperior, Groudon, Donphan, Claydol, Excadrill or Golurk to quickly take Luxray down.

Luxray can be Arlo’s last Pokémon
Tips for battling Leader Arlo in Pokémon GO
When you’re facing a leader, they are much more challenging than a grunt. For starters, they have a variety of possible Pokémon to use, which makes it difficult to counter the first attempt. Secondly, their Pokémon are much stronger than the ones a grunt uses. The first Pokémon is fairly weak, but the last two are pretty strong, especially the third one. As such, it’s important to use your moves wisely.
When you battle Arlo in Pokémon GO, make sure to tap furiously. You want to get as many attacks in as physically possible. This may end up taking down his Teddiursa pretty quickly and without you having to burn a shield. Speaking of, Team GO Rocket Leaders will use their shields. They are like Giovanni in that they’ll use them if you use an attack no matter what.
You can use this to your advantage by forcing Arlo to use his shields when it wouldn’t make sense to. For example, if he’s one hit from losing a Pokémon, use a charged attack. As long as he has a shield, he will use it. After he runs out, you can use them strategically to remove the most health from his Pokémon. There is often a brief delay between when Arlo will throw his Pokémon out and the first attack they do, so be sure to keep tapping in the meantime to maximize your charged attacks and deal more damage.
More Pokémon = more Premier Balls
Another thing to keep in mind is that you get more Premier Balls at the end if you have all three or even two Pokémon remaining. As such, it might be a good idea to switch to the right counter as soon as he brings in his next Pokémon rather than waiting for the first one to die. If you have all three, you’ll have nine Premier Balls. If you have two, you get eight and one leaves you with seven throws.
Shadow Pokémon can be shiny and they can be useful, so you will want as many chances to catch them as possible, so try to keep your ‘mons alive. This is true for all leaders, not just Arlo.
Please keep in mind that Arlo’s Pokémon change every once in a while, so the counters you used last time may not work this time. Additionally, you must have a Rocket Radar equipped (which requires defeating six grunts and taking six mysterious components) for any leader to spawn, but it can be any of the three.
