How to get Metal Coat in Pokémon GO – Metal Coat Guide

If you are trying to evolve certain Pokémon, they may require an evolution item. It’s important to know how to get Metal Coat in Pokémon GO as well as a Sinnoh Stone, King’s Rock or other item. The Metal Coat is one of the more rare evolution items to find and there is no surefire way to get it. Because of this, many trainers spend a lot of time hunting this item to no avail. Fortunately, there are ways to target the item even if there’s no guarantee of it being granted. Here’s what you can do.

How to get Metal Coat in Pokémon GO- Obtaining the elusive evo item

One way to get it is to continuously spin Pokéstops. There may not be a Metal Coat in there until the seventh day in a row. If you rack up six consecutive days of spinning a stop or gym, the seventh day will always have an evolution item. However, that can include:

  • Sun Stone
  • Sinnoh Stone
  • Dragon Scale
  • King’s Rock
  • Up-Grade
  • Unova Stone

As such, the Metal Coat is not guaranteed, but is possible. Additionally, it is extremely rare, but there is about a 1% chance of a regular Pokéstop spin (as in, a spin on any day that’s not the seventh in a row) rewarding an evolution item. Once again, there’s no guarantee it will be a Metal Coat. The first spin of the day and spins on your team’s gyms often have good rewards, so that may be the best chance.

Research tasks can give Metal Coats. It’s wise to check what rewards the challenges will give you so you can prioritize the good ones, especially if there is one for this rare evolution item. Evolution items have been known to drop as the item reward for winning two battles in the Pokémon GO Battle League, but again, there’s no guarantee of the one you need.

The final method of acquiring a Metal Coat is by gift. Pretty much all items can be acquired via gifts, which also means there’s a very low chance of getting the one you need. If you open gifts continuously, there’s certainly a chance you come away with a Metal Coat in Pokémon Go. If you don’t, you can always clear item space and open more gifts to keep trying if you fail.

Which Pokémon need a Metal Coat?

A select few Pokémon need evolution items to evolve as well as the requisite candy. For Metal Coat, there are currently only two Pokémon that need this item: Onyx and Scyther. By giving an Onix a Metal Coat and 25 candies, it will evolve to a Steelix. If you give Scyther a Metal Coat and 50 candies, it evolves to Scizor.

How to use a Metal Coat in Pokémon GO

Using items can be tricky in Pokémon GO as many of them are only able to be used in certain scenarios. For instance, you can only pull out a Pokéball during an encounter and you can’t use a potion during battle. Evolution items can only be used when you’re on the Pokémon’s page. So, to evolve an Onyx, for example, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Pokéball and go to Items.
  2. Ensure you have a Metal Coat.
  3. Exit the Items section.
  4. Head to the Pokémon tab.
  5. Search for your Onyx and choose the one you want to evolve.
  6. Scroll down a bit and check if you have enough candy.
  7. Click evolve.
  8. Click on the Metal Coat when it appears and your Pokémon will evolve.

The steps are the same for evolving a Scyther with a Metal Coat. If you have shinies of either of these but not enough Metal Coats to go around, you may need to decide whether or not you want the shiny or the regular version.
