How to get Umbreon in Pokémon GO
Eevee has several evolutions in Pokémon GO. The Dark-type evolution is a fan favorite, so trainers are likely wondering how to get Umbreon in Pokémon GO. Right now, it is one of eight possible evolutions. More are unlikely to come, but it can’t be totally ruled out as there are more types remaining. The first three, Flareon, Jolteon and Vaporeon, are usually random evolutions within Pokémon GO since they were the first ones in Generation I. To get them, you simply click evolve and hope for the best. The next five (Espeon, Umbreon, Glaceon, Leafeon and Sylveon) have to be done certain way. Here’s how to get Umbreon in Pokémon GO.
How to get Umbreon in Pokémon GO
Umbreon can only be evolved to during the night. Several Pokémon across the generations have unique evolution tricks, including having to have the device held a certain way, battle in raids first or be the buddy for catching several Pokémon. Umbreon has a few things that need to be done before you can evolve to it.
The first step is to make it your buddy Pokémon. Do this by clicking on your current buddy and scrolling to the bottom of the screen. There is an option to swap buddies. Do this. You can only do it 20 times in a day, but that shouldn’t really hinder anything. Proceed from there and search for the Eevee you want to evolve. You can appraise to find out if you have one with strong IVs or you can use a very high CP Eeeve. It’s whatever you prefer.

Shiny Umbreon
Furthermore, you may want to evolve a shiny Umbreon. Eevee was the featured Pokémon of a Community Day in 2021 and it had a Spotlight Hour recently, so you may have one. This is what a shiny Umbreon looks like.

If you’ve compared shiny Umbreon to other shiny Eevee evolutions and want to do this one, go ahead and select the shiny. If not, then choose a regular one to be your new buddy. After that, you will need to walk 10 kilometers (or a little over six miles) in the game. Ensure your Adventure Sync is on or open the app while walking. This will award you two candies, but that’s not really helpful unless you’re short on candy to evolve. The next step is to evolve, though you do have to have 25 candies to do so. If you don’t, keep walking to earn more candy, use rare candy or catch more Eevees.
If you do and you have walked the requisite amount, then there is just one stipulation: It has to be during the night. Normally, nighttime begins at 8 pm local time in Pokémon GO. As long as it is after that time, you can evolve and it will turn into an Umbreon. To be certain, check the silhouette on the evolve button. If it’s an Espeon still, then it is not nighttime yet.
Name trick works for Umbreon in Pokémon GO
The first time you evolve to a certain Eevee evolution, you can use the name trick which is exclusive to Pokémon GO. Every single evolution has a name that sets in motion the specific evolution. For Umbreon, this is Tamao. Edit the name of your Eevee to that and it should allow you to evolve without having to go through any of the above struggles. Once again, check the silhouette to ensure it will become the right Pokémon.
The rest of the Eeveelution names are:
- Pyro – Flareon
- Rainer – Vaporeon
- Sparky – Jolteon
- Kira – Sylveon
- Sakura- Espeon
- Linnea – Leafeon
- Rea – Glaceon
Unfortunately, this only works a single time. After it has been done with the name, you have to evolve the normal way, and can refer to the above guide. If you already have an Umbreon in your Pokédex, chances are the name trick was used since it is so much easier. To check, try naming the Eevee and if the evolution silhouette changes from a question mark to whichever evolution you’re trying to get, then that name will work. If it stays a question mark, it will not.
