How to turn off AR mode in Pokémon GO
AR mode is a very unique aspect of the game. While it’s not universally loved or used, it is still a very cool mechanic that Niantic included. Pokémon GO is supposed to be tethered to the real world, hence the map and the Pokéstops being tied to real locations. Everything in it is a replica of the real world surrounding players. That’s why AR mode exists, to further that connection and let players see their catches in the real world.
Nevertheless, turning it off is fortunately pretty simple. The first time you encounter something after logging in, the game is automatically on Augmented Reality. If this is the case, you’ll know it right away. If it is, the solution is very simple. In the top right corner of the screen, no matter where the Pokémon is, has the AR button. It should be slid on and green. Simply tap that button again to turn it off. This will revert back to the normal view.

AR mode is designed to be realistic, but the developers came up with a way to make it even more realistic with Niantic AR or AR+. This can be turned on by clicking the Pokéball, navigating to settings and going into the AR section.

Niantic AR mode takes Pokémon to a new level
Niantic defines this new mode like this:
“AR+ mode is an enhanced version of Pokémon GO’s augmented reality feature in which Pokémon appear anchored to your real-world environment right in front of you.”
With it enabled, players can walk right up to a Pokémon for a shot at landing an Excellent Throw or to take a picture. Pokémon are aware of players, so they need to use caution. Moving toward a Pokémon too fast will scare it away, but a slow approach won’t frighten them. This is a great way for trainers to mimic what it would be like to catch a Pokémon in the real world.
There is a reaction level on the Pokémon, so you’ll know if you’re frightening it. Once you get close enough, you can throw the Pokéball at it. As always, it can break out and it can theoretically flee as well.
If using AR of any kind, it is imperative to make sure you’re in a safe environment. Additionally, you need to have ample lighting, so make sure the area you are playing in is well-lit or other problems can ensue.
