What do the different circles mean in Pokémon GO? If you’ve spent any amount of time playing Pokémon GO since it came out in 2016, you’ve noticed that there are circles around the Pokémon when you try to catch them. This is completely unlike the catching method in mainline console Pokémon games. In those, such as Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, your avatar simply throws a ball at them. Even in the Pokémon: Detective Pikachu film, the characters threw balls at Pokémon and just attempted to get close enough to catch. That is completely unlike the unique catch system in Pokémon GO.
What do the different circles mean in Pokémon GO? Exploring catch system in mobile game
The different circles around Pokémon in the game indicate how easy it will be to catch. If you’ve ever noticed, low CP Pokémon generally have green circles and are very easy to catch. Legendaries, on the other hand, have dark red circles. These are often very difficult to catch. Everything in between determines the difficulty level. Generally speaking, the higher the CP, the harder it is to catch.

A green circle means the Pokémon will be pretty easy to catch
For example, a 10 CP Magikarp has probably the brightest green circle when you attempt to catch it. A 350 CP Zigzagoon will come with a yellow circle and a 2786 CP Regigigas will have a dark red circle. However, it’s not always determined by the CP. A 535 CP Turtwig will often have a red circle as well. If you use your Daily Incense and happen to get a Galarian Moltres, Zadpos or Articuno, they will likely be a low CP. Even though they’re a Legendary at 644 CP, they will still have a red circle.
Change the color of different circles around Pokémon
There are ways to change the Pokémon GO circles around Pokémon colors, though. If you up the level of the ball you’re using, the color changes. Or if you see a 721 Chimchar in the wild and you change from a Pokéball to a Great Ball, the color will turn to yellowish. If you again upgrade to an Ultra Ball, it will get closer to green.
Similarly, you can use berries to do the same. A Razz Berry will make it easier to catch and a Golden Razz Berry will make it even easier to catch. The combination of a Golden Razz Berry and an Ultra Ball makes most things have a somewhat green circle and makes them much easier to catch.
A curveball makes the catch rate higher, but it does nothing to the color of the circles in Pokémon GO. When you first get into an encounter with a Pokémon, hold down on your screen. This will act as if you’re about to throw the ball at it and will reveal the color of the circle. From there, you can adjust accordingly to ensure you have a good catch rate while using an appropriate amount of items and the right ball.
