In a Pokémon battle, it’s very important to have good counters. That means you’ll need to know what types are good in what situations, which includes the knowledge of what beats Flying type Pokémon. In every situation, you need to know what types are effective against the ones you are facing. If not, you’ll likely end up on the losing end. Fortunately, the knowledge is easily accessible and Flying-types have plenty of weaknesses you can exploit.

Flying-types are weak to the following moves:

Electric-type
Rock-type
Ice-type

Any of these cute Pokémon will do well against Flying for the most part. Here are some examples to use:

As well as these pure types, dual types can work well, too. For example, an Ice/Rock-type Pokémon would be very useful. Here are some examples:

Alolan Golem (Rock/Electric-type)
Aurorus (Rock/Ice-type)
Iron Thorns (Rock/Electric-type)
Hisuian Avalugg (Ice/Rock-type)
Frost Rotom (Electric/Ice-type)
Arctozolt (Electric/Rock-type)

These will be uniquely tailored to fight a Flying type. Additionally, if you can’t get these type Pokémon, ensure you at least have something in your party that has an Electric-, Rock-, or Ice-type move that you can use.

Types to avoid when fighting Flying-type Pokémon

Knowing what beats Flying type Pokémon is not the only thing trainers will need for a battle. They’ll also need to know which types Flying is super effective against. The following are weak to Flying moves:

Bug-type
Fighting-type
Grass-type

That means that even if these types are paired with Ice-, Rock- or Electric-types, they are not a wise choice. Avoid the following:

Hisuian Electrode (Electric/Grass-type)
Mow Rotom (Electric/Grass-type)
Pawmot (Electric/Fighting-type)
Galvantula (Bug/Electric-type)
Vikavolt (Bug/Electric-type)
Iron Hands (Fighting/Electric-type)
Abomasnow (Grass/Ice-type)
Crabominable (Fighting/Ice-type)
Cradily (Rock/Grass-type)
Armaldo (Rock/Bug-type)
Terrakion (Rock-Fighting-type)
Shuckle (Bug/Rock-type)
Crustle (Bug/Rock-type)
Kleavor (Bug/Rock-type)

If you use one of these Pokémon during a battle with a Flying-type, there’s a very strong chance that the Pokémon you face will have a move that can easily take down yours. Just because one type is effective against something doesn’t mean the other is immune from its weakness.

In almost every mainline Pokémon game, there are gyms for most types. In Scarlet and Violet, there were eight gyms and this is pretty consistent across a lot of the franchise. In your travels throughout these games, you will undoubtedly come up against a gym master who specializes in Flying-types. Be sure to stack your party with high-level Pokémon that were mentioned above (and avoid the others) to make light work of it and move up in the game.
